Technical and Design Notes

The Folie Imposée, or simply Folie for short, was created to further develop and refine the systems tested by the Rig Ring prototype. As the name implies, it is as much a psychological weapon as a physical one, and draws on Nahia's empathic abilities to power a set of three Newtype-use systems designed to be used in tandem.

Physically, the Folie was intended to be similar to the Ring in design and capabilities; in order to retain the Ring's superior acceleration and maneuverability, it was built with a high number of verniers, and a set of powerful thrusters. In addition, it was stripped of any unnecessary equipment and nearly all armor, retaining only a thin layer. Above this rests a more effective defense: a layer of translucent armor over certain points on the suit. However, the main purpose of this armor is not protection--each piece is a lightweight, aerodynamically shaped bit with an open-air barrel, made more difficult to track by its transparency (although it is not entirely invisible; the reactor and internal wiring are still visible). The visible armor layer can be jettisoned as well, revealing a skeletal-looking frame.

The Rig Ring's signature ring psycommu has been refined and miniaturized, obviating the need for the Ring's signature crest. Aside from this, it is capable of acting as a general psycowave amplifier, inducing an emotion of the user's choice in those within range. However, it requires a trained newtype to utilize it, and the psycowave pattern for each individual emotion must be learned and trained for specifically. The "Proxy System" is a supplementary system to the psycowave amplifier, allowing the pilot to direct the emotions invoked onto a specific target.

The so-called "Idée Fixe System", on the other hand, is entirely new, albeit one that could be considered a logical next step in this developmental path. The system scans the Newtype pilot's brain, picking up on their active thoughts--passive thoughts, such as those dealing with directing funnels, are unaffected--and transmits them into the minds of those within range (or, if the pilot so chooses, a specific target or targets). Like the ring psycommu, training is required in order to use this system; the user must be able to control their thoughts, in order not to transmit thoughts other than the desired ones. It must be noted that this is not a form of mind control, and the user will not believe the thoughts to be their own; the effect is more along the lines of hearing a voice in one's head.
