Flak is a CO in the Advance Wars games. He was not in the original Advance Wars, merely being a Black Hole CO promoted from private by Hawke.

Character

Statistics

Flak's units rely on strength instead of skill. Since Advance Wars is turn-based, Flak's abilities involve some luck, which can either help him or hinder him. His CO Powers also widen the range of possible damage with luck, both ways.

Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising

  • Day-To-Day:
    • Luck penalty of 1 full HP
    • Maximum luck normally 2.5 HPs (instead of the standard 1 HP), before applying above Luck penalty
  • CO Power: Brute Force
    • Luck penalty increased to 2 full HPs
    • Maximum luck becomes 6 full HPs, before applying CO Power Luck penalty
  • Super CO Power: Barbaric Blow
    • Luck penalty increased to 3 full HPs
    • Maximum luck becomes 11 full HPs, before applying CO Power Luck penalty

Advance Wars Dual Strike

  • Day-To-Day:
    • Luck penalty of 1 full HP
    • Maximum luck normally 3.5 HPs (instead of the standard 1 HP), before applying above Luck penalty
  • CO Power: Brute Force
    • Luck penalty increased to 2 full HPs
    • Maximum luck becomes 7 full HPs, before applying CO Power Luck penalty
  • Super CO Power: Barbaric Blow
    • Luck penalty increased to 3 full HPs
    • Maximum luck becomes 12 full HPs, before applying Super CO Power Luck penalty

Balance

Flak is a luck CO who could have good days or bad days; consequently, need for balancing him is minimal. The point of game balance in multiplayer is to make the various concepts in the game fair for serious competition, and reliance is luck is highly punishing there because of Murphy's Law, although the threat of higher possible damage can be used as a psychological weapon. Flak is instead meant for matches where the point is merely to play around, and suits non-extreme gamblers, particularly those who don't prefer to play as Nell, probably because Nell is intentionally overpowered by virtue of being a trophy CO.

That doesn't mean that CO balance should be ignored altogether. Flak's Day-To-Day luck damage mean in AW2 is less than that of most other COs' while his CO Powers increase his Luck penalty, which is far more punishing than a first glance may already suggest. He got a well-deserved increase in Advance Wars Dual Strike. His Day-To-Day luck damage mean there is higher than other COs' (barring fellow luck COs), but the Luck penalty balances that out as well.
