River is a type of terrain throughout the entire Nintendo Wars series.

Purpose

The River terrain is used to separate land forms, and is usually accompanied by Bridges. In the earlier installments of the Nintendo Wars series, it is more possible to traverse than Mountains. However, the only time it provides any defense is in Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo, and even then it is small. Even in the Advance Wars series, River tiles provide no assistance whatsoever to any occupying units, despite giving the same Movement Costs as Mountains there in normal weather. (Although weather doesn't affect movement on Rivers, whereas it does with Mountains.)

Fortunately, the River terrain is unlikely to be a lot of any map, given the way it is designed. Though maps with a River anywhere near combat are bound to encourage indirects such as Artillery.

A River tile in Game Boy Wars 3 can be turned into a Bridge tile by the Constructor. This allows for land unit only maps where the armies' HQs are separated completely by River terrain to work, since a newly built bridge allows land units to invade once hard to access territory effectively.
