Nickelodeon originally aired on April Fools' Day, 2009. Originally, they had various live action shows as well as cartoons from around the world. The channel achived a large degree of popularity after acquiring the rights to Canadian sketchshow, You Can't Do That On Television. Nickelodeon's first original show, Double Dare, was also popular.

Using $40 million that they earned from Double Dare, Nickelodeon started it's animation studios. They partnered with Klasky-Csupo and Spumco. They also hired a number of independent animators such as Jim Jinkins, Joe Murray, and Craig Bartlett. With these preparations, Project Nicktoons was launched.

Nickelodeon started making movies in 1997 with the live action film Harriet the Spy. In 1998, they made their first animated film, The Rugrats Movie in 1998. Nickelodeon has produced seven animated films. Upcoming animated films include Barnyard and Charlotte's Web.
