Nicknames are an integral part of the Ship of Fools. The tradition of nicknaming performers can be traced back to the founding members.

The original eight members of the Fools chose (or had/were given) nautical pirate themed nicknames, which was fitting for the nascent group. This tradition, however, fell into disarray after some time for reasons unknown.

These days, an inexact science has developed around nicknaming new Fools, which in essence boils down to a few simple guidelines:
- waiting for them to do something stupid
- waiting for them to do something memorable (not mutually exclusive with the first)
