Playing It Safe is the third episode of the first season of Shining Time Station in the style of Barney and Friends Season 1-3. It aired on April 8, 1992.

  • This episode features Barney, Baby Bop, Ash, Mary, The Conductors (GC, AB and MB), Luci, Min, Kathy, Derek, Mel Blake, Penny Crygor, Josie McCoy and Brad Buttowski. One day, the gang learn about getting safety rules, and by making sure no one gets hurt. However, in the play of Little Red Riding Hood, Luci runs around Derek too fast, and she goes out of control. They rush her to the hospital, and Dr. Anna and Dr. Proctor explain that Luci will have to recover. Later, Luci comes back, much better and the others are relieved.

  • (The episode begins with the same Barney theme song)
  • Kids: Barney is a dinosaur From our imagination, And when he's tall, he's what we call A dinosaur sensation! Barney's friends are big and small; They come from lots of places. After school they meet to play And sing with happy faces Barney shows us lots of things Like how to play pretend, ABC's and 123s And how to be a friend. Barney comes to play with us Whenever we may need him. Barney can be your friend too, If you just make-believe him!
  • (The title card reads: Playing It Safe and we start our episode)
  • (As it happens, Ash and Mary are taking Mel, Penny, Josie and Brad to the playground)
  • Ash: We're going to learn about safety rules.
  • Mary: Just once.
  • Mel: Oh, Ashy Boy, you loved how you want safety patrol.
  • Penny: I was childhood friends with you, just like Serena of the Kalos region.
  • Josie: Wow, you'd be happy to help.
  • Brad: Not even a Dill Weed like my brother.
  • (Luci and the others arrive)
  • Luci: Hey guys.
  • Ash: Luci and the gang.
  • Mel: Oh, you loved how you look.
  • Min: That's why we're doing safety patrol.
  • Kathy: Thank goodness Julie's new to the family.
  • Derek: Why don't you come along for safety rules?
  • Penny: We will.
  • Josie: Valerie and Melody will love it.
  • Brad: Oh yes.
  • (Barney comes to life)
  • Barney: Well then, safety first.
  • Ash and Mary: Barney!
  • (The Conductors appear)
  • Mr. Conductor 3: You know the simple rules.
  • Mel: Mr. Conductors 1, 2 and 3!
  • Penny: Thank goodness we were ready for safety.
  • Mr. Conductor 2: And so do us. Learning can be super fun.
  • Luci: See, Min? They're always on the go.
  • Min: That's right.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Life on the Island of Sodor can be old fashioned. Let me tell you about Toby.
  • (Mr. Conductor 1 blows his whistle and Toby The Tram Engine starts)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Toby is a tram engine. He has cowcatchers and side plates and doesn't look like a steam engine at all. He takes from farms and villages to the main line and is cheerful to everyone he meets. He has a coach called Henrietta who has seen better days.
  • Henrietta: It's not fair at all.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: She grumbles remembering she used to be full and nine cars would rattle behind her. Now there were only 3 or four for the farms and factories send their goods mostly by truck. Toby is always careful. The cars, buses and trucks often had accidents. Toby hasn't had an accident for years. But the buses are crowded and Henrietta is empty.
  • (Toby's bell rings)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: A lady and a stout gentleman stood on Toby's platform. He was of course Sir Topham Hatt. But Toby didn't noticed yet.
  • Children: Come on, grandfather.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Cried the children.
  • Children: Do look at this engine.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: That's a tram engine, Stephen.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Bridget: Is it electric?
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Asked Bridget.
  • Toby: Whoosh!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Hissed Toby.
  • Stephen: Shh!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said her brother.
  • Stephen: You've offended him.
  • Bridget: But trams are electric, aren't they?
  • Sir Topham Hatt: They are mostly, and this is a steam tram.
  • Children: May we go in it, grandfather, please?
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Stop!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Sir Topham Hatt to the conductor. They all scrambled into Henrietta.
  • Henrietta: Hip-hip hooray!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Chanted Henrietta. But Toby didn't sing.
  • Toby: Electric indeed! Electric indeed!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He snorted. He was proud of being a steam tram.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: What is your name?
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Asked Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Toby: Toby, sir.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Thank you, Toby, for a very nice ride.
  • Toby: Thank you, sir.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Toby. He felt better now.
  • Toby: This gentleman...
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He thought.
  • Toby: a gentleman who knows how to speak to engines.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: The children came every day for two weeks. Sometimes they rode with the conductor, sometimes in empty cars. On the last day of all the driver invited them into his cab. All were sorry when they had to go away and Sir Topham Hatt and his family thanked everyone.
  • Toby: Come again soon.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Replied Toby.
  • Children: We will, we will.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Called the children. And they waved till Toby was out of sight. The months passed. Toby had few cars and fewer passengers.
  • Driver: Our last day, Toby.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said his driver one morning.
  • Driver: The manager says we must close tomorrow.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: That day, everyone will have a chance of a last ride. The passengers joked and sang, but Toby and his driver wish they wouldn't.
  • Passengers: Goodbye, Toby.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said the passengers afterwards.
  • Passengers: We're sorry your line was closing down.
  • Toby: So am I.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Sighed Toby.
  • Toby: Nobody wants me.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Toby thought and went unhappily to sleep. Next morning, the shed was flung open and old Toby woke with a start to his driver waving a piece of paper at him.
  • Driver: Wake up, Toby!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He shouted excitely.
  • Driver: The mail has just arrived and there's a letter for us from the stout gentleman! Maybe it's good news.
  • (Toby The Tram Engine ends)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: So you see, Toby had his first day ever.
  • Kathy: Thanks for the offer.
  • Derek: You'd be leaving right?
  • The Conductors: Right.
  • (The Conductors disappear)
  • (Baby Bop comes by)
  • Baby Bop: Anyone for safety?
  • Penny: Hello, Baby Bop.
  • Mary: We'll help you.
  • (Inside the Jukebox)
  • Tito: Tex and Rex will perform The Stranger Song.
  • Didi: Right on.
  • Tex: Ye know what we'll do?
  • Rex: Strangers for real.
  • Grace: Let's hit it, guys.
  • (Tex and Rex perform The Stranger Song, with the rest doing the instruments)
  • Tex and Rex: Never talk to strangers, That's very good advice. 'Cause you just can't tell If they're good or bad, Even though they may seem nice. Even though they may seem nice. Don't get in their car (no, no!) Don't take anything from them. (no, no!) Just turn around (Yeah!) And walk away (Yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! (Oh yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! Never talk to strangers That's very good advice. Cause you just can't tell If they're good or bad, Even though they may seem nice. Even though they may seem nice. Don't get in their car (no, no!) Don't take anything from them. (no, no!) Just turn around (Yeah!) And walk away (Yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! (Oh yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! Don't get in their car (no, no!) Don't take anything from them. (no, no!) Just turn around (Yeah!) And walk away (Yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! (Oh yeah!) Go back and tell a grownup friend! Go back and tell a grownup friend!
  • (The Stranger Song ends)
  • (Back with the gang, they are having a Little Red Riding Hood Play)
  • Derek: (as the Big Bad Wolf) I'm coming to eat you, grandma.
  • Luci: (as grandma) I don't think so.
  • (She runs around Derek in fast motion. But suddenly...)
  • Luci: (racing out of the classroom) Help!
  • Min, Kathy and Derek: Luci!
  • (A loud crash is heard)
  • (Ash and the others race over and find an unconscious Luci)
  • Ash: Oh no.
  • Min: Luci's down.
  • Brad: Team Rocket and The Greasers must have tricked her.
  • Penny: Quick. We'll take her to the hospital as fast as we can.
  • (At the hospital)
  • Kathy: Will Luci be alright, Dr. Anna?
  • Anna: I'm afraid yes, Kathy. She ran too fast and crashed badly.
  • Proctor: And now she needs to recover.
  • Mel: (whimpers and bursts into tears as she clutches onto Penny)
  • Penny: Don't cry, Mel.
  • (The Conductors reappear)
  • Mr. Conductor 3: What's all the commotion?
  • Ash: Luci has crashed and now she's in bad shape.
  • Mary: She is unable to get up.
  • Mr. Conductor 2: That's awful.
  • Josie: Poor Mel is crying because Luci's been hurt.
  • Brad: And now she's upset.
  • Mel: (through her tears) But why do they have to knock Luci down. It's not fair!
  • Penny: Don't worry, i'll sing you a song that will make you stop crying.
  • (She begins to sing Someone To Love You Forever, while comforting a crying Mel)
  • Penny: I know you're frightened and feel all alone, Not sure if you really belong. But friend with me, you will always be home And that's why I sing you this song I'll be someone to love you forever I'll stay with you when you're lonely and sad. Just look in my eyes and you'll see It doesn't matter if you're good or bad. There's no one more special to me. I'll be someone to love you forever, Sharing tomorrow together. When you reach out to me, I will always be someone to love you forever. Someone to love you forever Sharing tomorrow together When you reach out to me, I will always be... Someone to love you forever.
  • (Someone To Love You Forever ends)
  • Penny: There. Feeling better?
  • Mel: (sniveling) Thanks.
  • Luci: I'm back.
  • Min: We were so worried about you.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: See, it's a good thing we've been expecting.
  • Ash: Thanks for the offer.
  • Mary: Are there police coming to Sodor?
  • Mr. Conductor 1: They do, Mary. It happened to Thomas when he got into trouble. Let me explain.
  • (Mr. Conductor 1 blows his whistle and Thomas Breaks The Rules starts)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: There's the line to a quarry at the end of Thomas' branch. It goes to some distance along the road. Thomas was very careful to whistle here in case anyone was coming. Early one morning, a large policeman was sitting close to the line. Thomas liked policemen. He had been a great friend of the officer who had just retired.
  • Thomas: Peep! Peep!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He whistled.
  • Thomas: Good morning.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Thomas expected that the new officer would be friendly too. But was sorry to see that he didn't look friendly at all. He was red in the face and very cross.
  • Policeman: Disgraceful!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He spluttered.
  • Policeman: I didn't sleep a wink last night. It was so quiet, and now engines come whistling suddenly behind me.
  • Thomas: I'm sorry, sir.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: I only said good morning.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: The policeman pointed to Thomas.
  • Policeman: Where's your cowcatchers?
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He asked.
  • Thomas: But I don't catch cows, sir.
  • Policeman: Don't be funny.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Snapped the policeman. He looked at Thomas' wheels.
  • Policeman: No side plates either.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: And he wrote in his notebook.
  • Policeman: Engines goin on public roads must have their wheels covered and a cowcatcher in front to protect people and animals from being dragged under the wheels if they stray under the line. You haven't so you are dangerous.
  • Driver: Rubbish.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Thomas' driver.
  • Driver: We've been along here hundreds of times and never had an accident.
  • Policeman: That makes it worse.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: The policeman answered. He wrote Regular Law Breaker in his book. Thomas puffed sadly away. Sir Topham Hatt was having breakfast he was eating toast and marmalade. The butler came in.
  • Butler: Excuse me, sir, you're wanted on the telephone.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Bother that telephone!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • (Phone chattering)
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I'm sorry, my dear.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He said to his wife.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Thomas is in trouble with the police and I must go at once.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: At the station, Thomas' driver told Sir Topham Hatt what had happened.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Dangerous to the public indeed. We'll see about that.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Sir Topham Hatt spoke to the policeman. But however much he argued with him it was no good.
  • Policeman: The law is the law.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He said.
  • Policeman: And we can't change it.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Sir Topham Hatt felt exhausted.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I'm sorry, driver.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: He said.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: It's no use arguing with the policeman. We will have to make those cowcatcher things for Thomas i suppose.
  • Thomas: Everyone will laugh, sir.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: They say i look like a tram.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Sir Topham Hatt stared, then he laughed.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Well done, Thomas. Why didn't i think of it before. We need a tram engine. When i was on my holiday i met a nice little engine called Toby. He takes freight cars from the farms but the trucks have taken most of his work and he needs a change. He has cowcatchers and sideplates. I'll write to this superintedant at once.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: A few days later, Toby arrived.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: That's a good engine.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I see you brought your coach Henrietta.
  • Toby: You don't mind, do you, sir?
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Asked Toby.
  • Toby: The stationmaster wanted to use her as a hen house, and that would never do.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: No indeed.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: We couldn't allow that.
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Toby made the silly cars even better than Thomas did.
  • Policeman: Hey you!
  • Mr. Conductor 1: At first, Thomas was jealous, but he was so pleased when Toby rang his bell and frightened the policeman, they've been firmed friends ever since.
  • (Thomas Breaks The Rules ends)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: So that's why Thomas and Toby became firmed friends.
  • Mel: Thank you for hearing that.
  • Penny: You'd be leaving right?
  • The Conductors: Right.
  • (The Conductors disappear)
  • Luci: Let's go back to the classroom and sing a goodbye song.
  • Others: Right.
  • (Back at the classroom)
  • Barney: Time for a goodbye song.
  • Ash: Go ahead.
  • (They all sing I Love You)
  • Barney: I love you, you love me, we're a happy family, with a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won't you say you love me too?
  • All: I love you, you love me, we're best friends like friends should be, with a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won't you say you love me too?
  • (I Love You ends)
  • Ash: See ya, Barney.
  • Barney: Bye, Ash, bye everyone.
  • Mary and the rest: Goodbye, Barney.
  • (Ash turns off the lights and he and the others leave)
  • (Barney is then shown as a toy and winks as The Conductors reappear)
  • Mr. Conductor 1: Episode sweet episode.
  • Mr. Conductor 2: It's all in a wrap.
  • Mr. Conductor 3: We'll see you next time.
  • (The Conductors high 5 each other as the episode ends)
  • (We then find the end credits with the same shots in a Mucha Lucha style)
  • (While they roll, the same Barney end theme plays)
  • (After the credits, the same three logos appear)
