Prairie Dawn Goes to the Doctor Cover
Prairie Dawn Goes to the Doctor is a direct-to-video compilation about medical health and care. In this video, Prairie Dawn dosen't feel very good, she has come down with a severe cold. and something called Fearitis, and she has to go to the doctor, but she's afraid to go because she's afraid of shots (otherwise known as trypanophobia), So her friends Big Bird, Grover, and Elmo help her not to be afraid of shots anymore. Released in 1989.

Segments

  • FRAME 1: Prairie Dawn welcomes the viewer to Sesame Street, and says that she isn't feeling well. She doesn't know what she caught, so she has to go to the doctor's office for a medical check-up. The only problem is she's afraid that she'll get a shot, like that time Grover got one for his annual check-up. Her friends Big Bird and Elmo show up to take Prairie to the clinic.
  • Grover's Health Minute: The Check-Up
  • FRAME 2: Grover comes out of the doctor's office with a bandage on his arm, and shows it to Prairie. It was a rainbow colored bandage. Grover explains that there's no need to be afraid of booster shots. Prairie hesitates and says :"booster shots?!" But Grover rejects and says it was only a small one. Pretty soon, Prairie Dawn was called into the doctor's office.
  • FRAME 2, cont'd: Nurse Susan measures her and takes her blood pressure. Her blood pressure seems normal, she takes Prairie Dawn's temperature and feels her forehead and finds out that it's up to 95%. Prairie Dawn then shouts "Oh, I knew it!" Susan reassures her and introduces Dr. Thad and the Medications.

  • FRAME 3: Prairie Dawn applauds and says "Bravo! Encore!" Then she sneezes. Susan and Big Bird say "geshundheit", and Prairie thanks them. Then Susan asks Prairie what's she here for, she asks if she has a broken wrist and shows the next film.

  • FRAME 4: Prairie Dawn denies and says that her wrists aren't broken. Susan then leaves and says the doctor will be with her soon. As she walks out of the room, we head over to another doctor's office, where....
  • Kermit the Frog goes to see his doctor, who listens to his heart. Describing what he hears as "groovy," the doctor sings "Heart of a Frog" about different kinds of noises (backed by frog nurses) (EKA: Episode 2649)
  • FRAME 5: The doctor comes in and introduces himself as Dr. Stiles (voiced by Jerry Nelson). He then meets Big Bird, Elmo, and her patient, Prairie. He first listens to Prairie Dawn's heart, and describes it as "groovy," just like Kermit's doctor.
  • A man talks about how much he loves his bones. Artist: Bruce Cayard (EKA: Episode 2955)

  • Ernie and Bert: Ernie calls a doctor over. The doctor checks up on Ernie, not letting Ernie explain why he had called him over until after the doctor sees that Ernie is fine and asks why he called him over. (EKA: Episode 0296)
  • FRAME 6: Dr. Stiles then shows Prairie a picture of healthy food, and then asks Prairie if she eats healthy. Prairie does and feels a song cue coming on.
  • Cookie Monster sings "Healthy Food" (EKA: Episode 2404)
  • FRAME 7: Dr. Stiles then sees that Prairie was sneezing then realizes that she has a cold. Prairie then blows her nose and asks Dr. Stiles if he knows anymore people who had colds before. Dr. Stiles says "All the time!"
  • Ernie and Bert: Ernie has heard that somebody in the neighborhood is sick. He looks in a medical book to find out how to tell if someone is sick... not realizing that Bert is the one with a cold. (EKA: Episode 0673)
  • FRAME 8: Big Bird tells Dr. Stiles that Ernie sometimes tries to make Bert play simply by pretending to be a doctor.
  • Ernie and Bert: Ernie asks Bert to go play in the park with him. When Bert says "no", Ernie wonders if he isn't feeling well, and starts to examine him. (First: Episode 0124)
  • FRAME 9: Dr. Stiles has the same book and reads it and finds out there's something worse with Prairie, he decides to take Prairie Dawn to an X-ray. But she doesn't know what an X-ray is.
  • FRAME 9, cont'd: Prairie Dawn goes to an X-ray technician named Ozzie (Martin P. Robinson) and asks him what's he going to do, he then explains he's going to "take pictures" of her insides.
  • Kermit's Lectures: Kermit has Herry Monster step behind an X-ray machine to show what's inside his body. (EKA: Episode 2254)
  • FRAME 10: Dr. Stiles looks at the X-ray pictures, and finds out that the shaking of the bones tells him that Prairie has Fearitis! Prairie exclaims "Oh, I'm so sick!" and then asks what's Fearitis. Fearitis is a sickness filled with things some people are afraid of, after Dr. Stiles explains that, he then decides to give Prairie Dawn a shot, then Prairie Dawn quivers. Dr. Stiles tells Prairie that shots are very important and they help you keep healthy, like to keep you away from influenza, for example.
  • An old man recites a poem about the time he had the flu. Artist: Bruce Cayard (EKA: Episode 1845)
  • FRAME 11: Dr. Stiles then explains that A subcutaneous injection is a typical "shot" patients receive from medical professionals. Sometimes patients are prescribed to give themselves these shots.  Prairie Dawn soon calms down and then is ready for the shot, but she needs to hug Big Bird for this. Dr. Stiles then gets a syringe needle, and chooses to inject the medicine into Prairie Dawn's arm. Then he administers the medicine slowly by pushing down on the plunger. Prairie Dawn hugs Big Bird tighter and says "Ouch!" and before she knew it, the injection was done. She was put on a rainbow bandage.
  • FRAME 11, cont'd: Dr. Stiles then perscribes her to drink plenty of juice, and take her temperature every afternoon, and she'll be better within a couple of days. And then Prairie and her friends leave.
  • FRAME 11, cont'd: Back on Sesame Street, Prairie Dawn explains what is better than going for a check-up, a pretend check-up!
  • Ernie and Bert: Ernie plays doctor and makes Bert be the patient for his check-up. He checks Bert's heart, mouth and more. At the end, Bert wonders how he is feeling, but Ernie can't tell him that until he's a real doctor, twenty-three years from now. Bert faints after Ernie's answer and Ernie wonders if there's a doctor in the house. (EKA: Episode 1090)
  • FRAME 12: Prairie Dawn then gets into her bed to rest and says good-bye to the viewers and falls asleep. Grover reads the sponsors.
