Make your translations rich — use synonyms.

This section of the Style Guide deals with the "hard nuts to crack", i.e. Ukrainian words and set expressions which our translators were uncomfortable with. English equivalents which are offered here were obtained by discussing them in pravdateam as well as other discussion boards, conducting comparison searches in Google and receiving kind advice from the colleagues whom we trust.

Please be free to use this shared wisdom but do not hesitate to conduct your own researches and then publish them here or to provide criticism for the existing HNTCs.

Avoid expertise, which in fact means досвід.

• почати переговори з газового питання: to start/initiate/launch gas talks

• Чорний PR: avoid direct translation. Better use: smear war/campaign, mudslinging campaign, a spin

Традиційне question не є в усіх випадках вдалим перекладом. Краще: issue, matter, problem, item (якщо це пункт договору, порядку денного тощо).

The best variant of translation is appropriate, although the dictionary may suggest the variant expedient which [implying quick, sometimes] has a negative connotation in English, i.e. used in the negative context.

impressive, fiery, prominent, outstanding, vivid

• яскравий приклад - an excellent example
