  • (An engine puffing by sequence occurs and we begin Emily Knows Best)
  • Michael Brandon: Emily Knows Best. The Island of Sodor has many beautiful sights. There are green fields and hills and many beautiful castles. The engines of Sodor love visit them all. One day, Emily was dropping visitors at the Ruin Castle. Once upon a time, a queen had lived there.
  • Emily: I'd like to be a queen.
  • Michael Brandon: Thought Emily.
  • Emily: Queens are in charge and tell everybody what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: Down the hill at the castle, Toby and Percy arrived. They were to shunt freight cars. Percy had never worked there before.
  • Percy: Ooh, look at the castle.
  • Michael Brandon: Peeped Percy excitedly.
  • Percy: I wonder who used to live there?
  • Toby: A king and queen.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Toby.
  • Toby: They were rule the island and told everyone what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: And he chuffed towards the freight cars. Percy stared at the castle. He was dreaming of kings and queen.
  • Toby: Percy!
  • Michael Brandon: Called Toby.
  • Toby: Come along. We've got a lot to do today.
  • Emily: Waiting for passengers is boring.
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed Emily. Then she remembered that Toby and Percy will working near the castle.
  • Emily: It would be much more fun to visit them.
  • Michael Brandon: She said. Toby and Percy were waiting to be coupled up when Emily chuffed in. She was very excited about the passengers.
  • Emily: Percy.
  • Michael Brandon: She whistled.
  • Emily: I've had an idea. Let's play a game.
  • Michael Brandon: Percy looked pleased.
  • Emily: I'll be queen and I'll tell you what to do today.
  • Michael Brandon: She said.
  • Emily: It'll be fun.
  • Michael Brandon: Percy liked the idea of having fun. But Toby thought Emily's idea was silly.
  • Toby: You have to be clever to be a queen.
  • Michael Brandon: He said wisely.
  • Toby: And know the right thing to do.
  • Emily: I always know what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed Emily. Toby laughed. That made Emily cross.
  • Emily: I show Toby that queen Emily knows best.
  • Michael Brandon: She wheeshed. Toby was now coupled up to his freight cars. Percy thought his look like troublesome trucks.
  • Toby: Don't worry.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Toby.
  • Toby: I'll be back soon. If you can't manage the troublesome trucks, wait for me and I'll tell you what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: And Toby steam slowly away. The troublesome trucks started to moan and groan.
  • Troublesome Trucks: No you don't! (laughing)
  • Michael Brandon: They clattered and chattered. Percy knew they were going to be trouble. Emily had been watching Percy.
  • Emily: If I want to be queen, I must tell Percy what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: She thought.
  • Emily: Because I know best.
  • Michael Brandon: Percy was shunting the troublesome trucks as hard as he could, but they wouldn't move. They were being very difficult. Emily chuffed to a halt.
  • Emily: (whistle toots) Percy!
  • Michael Brandon: She whistled loudly.
  • Emily: I am the queen today. I will tell you what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: Percy was worried. Toby usually knew best.
  • Emily: Take these troublesome trucks along my track.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Emily.
  • Emily: It's faster and they won't complain. Toby will be pleased when he sees how quick you are.
  • Michael Brandon: Percy wanted Toby to be pleased.
  • Percy: I'll do as you say, Queen Emily.
  • Michael Brandon: He tooted. Emily was pleased with herself. She watched as Percy blew a big wheesh of steam, Percy puffed, and he chuffed, and the troublesome trucks sped off. Emily led out a wheesh of steam. She did know best. Suddenly, there was a terrible noise.
  • (Crash!)
  • Michael Brandon: As the dust clear, Emily saw what had happened. The troublesome trucks had run into Mavis who was waiting on the track. Luckily, no one was hurt, but her load of stone had spilled all over the lines and one of the freight cars had come off the rails knocking over a telephone pole.
  • Mavis: Percy!
  • Michael Brandon: Cried Mavis.
  • Mavis: You're not supposed to be on this track!
  • Michael Brandon: Emily was shocked. Then there was another crash. It was Toby! His wheels had struck the telephone pole and he was derailed. Emily knew this was all her fault. But she didn't know what to do. The telephone line was down, so no one could call for help. Mavis couldn't move. She was stuck among-st the freight cars. And Percy couldn't move either.
  • Emily: I'm sorry, Toby.
  • Michael Brandon: Cried Emily.
  • Emily: I can't be a queen. I don't know what to do. I don't know best.
  • Michael Brandon: Toby wheeshed out a big cloud of steam.
  • Toby: I know what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: He cried.
  • Toby: Emily, you must go and get help.
  • Michael Brandon: Emily knew Toby was right. She steamed off as fast as she could. Emily whooshed to a halt to Maithwaite Station. She told the station manager what had happened. Quickly, he phoned for help. Soon, Toby had been lifted back up onto the rails. He wasn't hurt, but his cowcatchers would need to be repaired. Emily chuffed into the shunting yards. Sir Topham Hatt was very cross.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Emily,
  • Michael Brandon: He boomed.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: you have caused confusion and delay. Luckily, Toby knew what to do.
  • Michael Brandon: He added sternly.
  • Emily: I'm sorry.
  • Michael Brandon: Emily said.
  • Emily: Knowing the right thing to do isn't as easy as I thought.
  • Michael Brandon: She chuffed.
  • Emily: In future, I'll leave that job to a king or a queen or to Toby.
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin Whatever We Do)
  • Children: (singing) (Chorus x2) Whatever we do, we do it well because we all decide, To do each job we're told to do, with care with love with pride. (First Verse) Look at Edward at the back, helping others up the track, There goes Henry hauling freight, always proud to pull his weight. (Chorus x2) (Second Verse) Here comes Percy with the mail, right on time he'll never fail. There goes Gordon steaming by, proud as punch so that is why. (Chorus x2)
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin a learning segment)
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas is happy working on the Sodor Railway. It makes him very proud. Can you guess what makes him proudest? Shunting coal cars is hard and dirty work. But Thomas doesn't mind. Being good at shunting freight cars makes him very proud. Now Thomas is going to collect the children. Taking the children to school in Annie and Clarabel also makes him very proud.
  • (Guard's whistle blows)
  • Michael Brandon: But what do you think makes him proudest of all? When Thomas pulls into Tidmouth Sheds, and Sir Topham Hatt says...
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Thomas, you are a really useful engine.
  • Michael Brandon: That's what makes Thomas feel the proudest of all.
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin Gordon Takes A Tumble)
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon Takes A Tumble. Sir Topham Hatt's engines are proud of how useful they are. But none of them feels more important than Gordon.
  • Gordon: Watch out!
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon wheeshed.
  • Gordon: You'll get my paint all sooty.
  • Salty: Pulling freight cars is a sooty job.
  • Michael Brandon: Teased Salty.
  • Salty: But then you wouldn't know.
  • Gordon: Of course not.
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon huffed importantly.
  • Gordon: Express engines don't pull freight cars it wouldn't be dignified.
  • Percy: Dingyfried?
  • Michael Brandon: Puzzled Percy.
  • Percy: What's that?
  • Gordon: Dignified.
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon corrected.
  • Gordon: It means...
  • Salty: It means if someone's too big for his buffers.
  • Michael Brandon: Teased Salty.
  • Gordon: Pah!
  • Michael Brandon: Puffed Gordon and he puffed away. That evening, fog covered the Island of Sodor. Everything slowed down and soon the docks were packed with waiting freight cars. This caused confusion and delay. Sir Topham Hatt came to the sheds. He was in a great hurry.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Henry, Thomas and Percy.
  • Michael Brandon: He said.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You must go to the docks immediately.
  • Henry, Thomas and Percy: Yes sir.
  • Michael Brandon: They whistled. Then Sir Topham Hatt turned to the big blue engine.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You too, Gordon.
  • Michael Brandon: He said.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I need an engine to take the freight cars where they won't be in a way.
  • Gordon: Freight cars!?
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed Gordon. He could not believe what he had heard. Gordon wasn't happy to be pulling freight cars. He waited impatiently while they were shunted into place.
  • Gordon: Hurry up, hurry up.
  • Michael Brandon: He chuffed.
  • Thomas: Why the rush, Gordon?
  • Michael Brandon: Asked Thomas.
  • Gordon: If I must pull freight cars then I'll show Salty how an express engine pulls freight cars.
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon huffed.
  • Salty: Careful, captain.
  • Michael Brandon: Salty tooted.
  • Salty: You don't wanna get too big for your buffers.
  • Michael Brandon: But Gordon ignored Salty. The next morning, Gordon raced along with his heavy load.
  • Gordon: Now this is how you pull freight cars.
  • Michael Brandon: He puffed. But the signalman had accidentally left the points switched to the branch line. Gordon rattled through the junction.
  • Gordon: That's strange.
  • Michael Brandon: He exclaimed.
  • Gordon: I'm on the branch line.
  • Signalman: Oh no!
  • Michael Brandon: The signalman cried.
  • Signalman: Express trains aren't supposed to go that way.
  • Michael Brandon: But it was too late. Gordon had already raced into the distance. The old branch line was weak and rusty. There were signs warning all the trains to go slow. But Gordon ignored the sign.
  • Gordon: I'm an express engine I don't go slow.
  • Michael Brandon: He said and he went even faster. The branch line couldn't take his weight and the rails buckled.
  • Gordon: Oh help!
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon cried as he slid off the tracks and into a field.
  • (Gordon runs over a pile of hay)
  • Gordon: Whoa!
  • (Gordon hits some tires making him lose his tender)
  • Gordon: Whoa!
  • (Gordon crashes into a barn)
  • Michael Brandon: No one was hurt, but poor Gordon felt very undignified.
  • Gordon: What will Sir Topham Hatt say?
  • Michael Brandon: He groaned. He found out soon enough.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Well, Gordon.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You wanted to show Salty a thing or two and you certainly done that. You showed him how silly it is to ignore go slow signs.
  • Gordon: Sorry, sir.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Gordon and he let out a sad wheesh of steam. Gordon was soon repaired and back at the docks for work. He was very unhappy with himself.
  • Thomas: Everyone makes mistakes.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: Even you.
  • James: Salty's sorry he teased you.
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed James.
  • Gordon: And I'm sorry I was too big for my buffers.
  • Michael Brandon: Chuffed Gordon. And all the engines gave a jolly toot even Gordon.
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin another learning segment)
  • Michael Brandon: Gordon, Mavis and Percy each have a special job to do today. Pulling the express, shunting cars of slate at the quarry and taking the mail car. Can you guess which job would make Gordon feel really useful? There he goes. Around one bend and then around another. But where's he heading? To the express car. Gordon is pulling the express today. It's the job that makes him really useful. What about Mavis? Which job would make her really useful? She's on her way. Through the curves, round the bends. But where will she end up? At the slate car. Mavis is shunting slate cars at the quarry today. It's the job that makes her really useful. What about Percy? There he goes. Along the track, twisting and turning. But where is he going? To the mail car. Percy is taking the mail today. It's Percy's favorite job. It makes Percy feel really useful. Mavis, Percy and Gordon are each doing the jobs and make them feel really useful. Well done, everyone.
  • (Gordon, Mavis and Percy toot with joy)
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin Thomas' Day Off)
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas' Day Off. The engines on the Island of Sodor were always very busy. They liked being busy, and no engine liked being busy more than Thomas. But sometimes, Thomas also liked to have a day off. One autumn morning, Sir Topham Hatt came to the Tidmouth Sheds. He had important news.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: A new diesel engine has arrived on the Island.
  • Michael Brandon: He boomed.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: His name is Dennis. You must all help him get to know the Sodor Railway. And Thomas...
  • Michael Brandon: Added Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You have been working very hard. Today, you can have a day off.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas was very pleased.
  • Thomas: First, I will have a long washdown.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas chuffed cheerfully.
  • Thomas: Then, I shall go to Bluff's Cole.
  • Michael Brandon: On his way to the washdown, Thomas saw a diesel he'd never seen before. The diesel was huffing and puffing.
  • Thomas: Hello!
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas shouted.
  • Thomas: You must be Dennis. What's the matter?
  • Dennis: These troublesome trucks are too troublesome. I can't move them!
  • Thomas: It's my day off.
  • Michael Brandon: Whistled Thomas.
  • Thomas: But I'll help you.
  • Michael Brandon: This made Dennis very happy. Dennis watched Thomas biff and bump the troublesome trucks into line.
  • Thomas: All done!
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed Thomas. It was hard work, and he was tired.
  • Dennis: Thank you, Thomas.
  • Michael Brandon: Oiled Dennis. And he watched Thomas chuff away. Soon, Thomas was covered in bubbles!
  • Thomas: Shiny and bright, shiny and bright, that's what I'll be to start my day right!
  • Michael Brandon: He chirped cheerily. Dennis wasn't cheerful. Dennis was lazy. He didn't want to deliver his freight cars with tiles. Then, he saw Thomas. Dennis had an idea. He would ask Thomas to help him again.
  • Dennis: Help! Help!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis called weakly. Thomas slowed down.
  • Dennis: I don't know how to get to the schoolhouse.
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis groaned.
  • Thomas: Don't worry, Dennis!
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas puffed.
  • Thomas: I'll show you the way!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis smiled. His trick had worked! So Thomas showed Dennis the way to the junction.
  • Thomas: The schoolhouse is further along that track.
  • Michael Brandon: Wheeshed Thomas. Dennis watched Thomas puff away. Dennis wanted Thomas to take his freight cars for him. Suddenly, Dennis had another idea. He screamed for help again and again. Thomas heard the noise. He was worried. Dennis watched come back. His new trick had worked. Now, Dennis would pretend to have something wrong with him.
  • Dennis: Help!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis cried.
  • Dennis: I've overheated. You'll have to take these freight cars for me.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas knew it was his day off, but he still wanted to help.
  • Thomas: Don't worry.
  • Michael Brandon: Puffed Thomas.
  • Thomas: I'll find another engine to help you, on my way to Bluff's Cole.
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis was cross. He wanted Thomas to take his freight cars. Dennis decided to leave his freight cars.
  • Dennis: Then, another engine will have to take them!
  • Michael Brandon: He thought. So, Dennis raced way. He didn't care about the tiles, he didn't care about Thomas, all he cared about was getting far away from his work. His wheels were running faster and faster. Then, there was trouble.
  • (CRASH!)
  • Dennis: Help!
  • Michael Brandon: Called Dennis.
  • Dennis: Help! Help!
  • Michael Brandon: But this time, there was no one there to help. Thomas arrived at a signal. Percy had some important news.
  • Percy: The workmen are waiting for Dennis to bring the tiles to repair the school roof. The children can't go to school until it's mended, and no one knows where Dennis is!
  • Michael Brandon: Percy added.
  • Thomas: I do.
  • Michael Brandon: Wheeshed Thomas.
  • Thomas: He's broken down. I must go back to help him right away.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas quickly found Dennis. Thomas was very surprised.
  • Thomas: I thought you broke down at the junction!
  • Michael Brandon: Wheeshed Thomas.
  • Thomas: And where are the freight cars with tiles?
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis looked very shame-faced.
  • Dennis: I tricked you.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Dennis quietly.
  • Dennis: There was nothing wrong with me at the junction. I just didn't want to work with those heavy freight cars. I'm a really lazy engine.
  • Michael Brandon: Moaned Dennis. Dennis' wheels wobbled, and his diesel oil dripped. Now, Thomas could see Dennis really was in trouble! So Thomas decided to help one more time.
  • Thomas: I'll help you back onto the path.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas puffed.
  • Thomas: Then, I'll be your back engine. That way, we'll get the tiles to the schoolhouse in double quick time!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis smiled his biggest smile ever! Dennis and Thomas finally pulled into the schoolhouse station. Sir Topham Hatt was waiting.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Dennis, you have caused confusion and delay!
  • Michael Brandon: He boomed. Dennis felt bad.
  • Dennis: Thomas has shown me that being a really useful engine is much better than being a really lazy one!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis wheezed. Sir Topham Hatt was pleased. Thomas was pleased, too.
  • Dennis: Thank you, Thomas!
  • Michael Brandon: Dennis hooted.
  • Dennis: From now on, I will try to be a really useful engine!
  • (Another puffing by sequence occurs and we begin Engine Roll Call)
  • Children: (singing) They're two, they're four, they're six, they're eight. Shunting trucks and hauling freight. Red and green and brown and blue. They're the really useful crew. All with different rows to play round Tidmouth Sheds or far away. Down the hills and round the bends, Thomas and his friends. Thomas - he's the cheeky one, James - is vain but lots of fun, Percy - pulls the mail on time, Gordon - thunders down the line, Emily - really knows her stuff, Henry - toots and huffs and puffs, Edward - wants to help and share, Toby - well let's say, he's square. They're two, they're four, they're six, they're eight. Shunting trucks and hauling freight. Red and green and brown and blue. They're the really useful crew. All with different rows to play round Tidmouth Sheds or far away. Down the hills and round the bends, Thomas and his friends. They're two, they're four, they're six, they're eight. Shunting trucks and hauling freight. Red and green and brown and blue. They're the really useful crew. All with different rows to play round Tidmouth Sheds or far away.
