[edit] Why Apple Won't Recall Your Bum PowerBook
A Yahoo! Tech blog entry by Christopher Null, The Working Guy – from 13 May 07
Mr Null seems to be principally exercised with hunting down the paper tiger of a full-blown “$5million” product recall, whereby Apple desperately tries to replace EVERY possible suspect display, whether or not it’s succumbed to the dreaded “Bridget Riley” defect. He seems to be unaware of the terms of the the (most directly analogous) 15-inch PowerBook G4 Display Repair Extension Program, which I believe the aggrieved 17inch PowerBook are actually after. Still, give it a read, and leave you own comment.
[edit] c’t magazine
On Tom Goskar’s 17″ Apple PowerBook screen problems blog, another PowerBook owner said...
- 7 of us wrote to Germany’s most respectful computer magazine (c’t) and the editor confronted Apple with the number of defects and the forum censorship. And guess what: Apple tells the public that it’s all isolated incidents and does not comment on the censorship at all. This was published.

Well done to our German comrade! Unfortunately, “There is only a shortened online version of this report and unfortunately it does not contain any reference to our problem; only the printed version does. And it is only a short remark and does not go into detail. But c't clearly critizises Apple but does not implress that company. In the last two years the editor of the annual notebook manufacturer service report put a statement into the article saying that owners of faulty machines have a stronger standpoint against the manufacturer if they act together.” (from email)
[edit] This Week in Tech (TWiT) and MacBreak Weekly
On Vincenzo Acinapura’s powerbook17lines.blogspot.com blog, kingmac said...
- I am also going to try and contact the This Week in Tech (TWiT) and MacBreak Weekly podcast people to see if the topic can be brought up there. Both are highly popular technology podcasts and feature respected industry professionals. I have not found contact details for these yet, but will post the emails when I do.

Good news, kingmac. We look forward to hearing how you get on.
[edit] Wikipedia
The Wikipedia entry on this issue - PowerBook G4 > Aluminum PowerBook G4 > Quality_issues - has been extended to:
- The PowerBook G4 17" 1.67GHz (type M9689 introduced in Q2 2005) may suffer from poor quality display. The devices were the last ones shipped with the matte 1440x960 pixel low resolution display. After around 15 months of usage, the displays may show permanently shining lines of various colors stretching vertically across the LCD. Since 27 Nov 06, moderators at the official Apple Discussions forums have been censoring comments regarding these display defects by deleting posts, removing large threads and censuring posters: see Powerbook 17 Pixel Lines Issue [a link to Vincenzo Acinapura’s blog entry on censorship] and PowerBook G4 17" LCD Defect wiki [a link to this Wiki] for details.
