Narrator: Ryan is a purple tank engine who works on the Harwick Branch Line on the Island of Sodor. He usually handles all the goods work while Daisy, the Diesel Railcar handles all the passenger runs. One cool summer night, Ryan was getting ready for a night goods run when Sir Topham Hatt came to see him.

Sir Topham Hatt: Ryan, Daisy had to go to the dieselworks since she's not feeling well. I need you to do a job for her tomorrow.

Ryan: What would that be, Sir?

Sir Topham Hatt: Well, do you know who Gilbert Jones is?

Ryan: Isn't he the controller of Misty Island?

Sir Topham Hatt: Exactly. He and his family are going to come here tomorrow for one of Skiff's railboat tours. You have to pick them up from Knapford and take them to the harbor.

Ryan: Yes, sir. That shouldn't be a bother at all. I have to go now, and deliver my goods train. Good night, Sir.

Sir Topham Hatt: Good night, Ryan.

Narrator: Ryan was sure that he could take the Jones family up to Arlesburgh Harbor and continue with his goods work without any trouble. But later that night, Ryan had to stop.

Ryan: What's going on?

Signalman: There's signal problems all along the line, Ryan. We can't let you go through until it's fixed. It's dangerous to run without signals.

Ryan: How long will it take?

Signalman: It could be a while, but I don't know for sure.

Narrator: Ryan was upset that he was going to late, but he knew that there was nothing he could do about. All he could do was wait for the signals to be fixed. After a couple of hours, the signals were fixed, and it was safe for Ryan to go. It wasn't until morning when Ryan finally finished his run. He was very tired, and he was having trouble remembering his jobs for the day.

Ryan: (Yawns) I take the Jones from Arlesburgh to Knapford. No, wait. It's the other way around, isn't it?

Narrator: Ryan picked up a coach from a siding, and hurried over to the station. Mr. Jones and his family were there waiting.

Ryan: Hello. My name's Ryan. Sorry if I'm late.

Mr. Gilbert Jones: Oh no, Ryan. You're not late at all. You're right on time. My name's Gilbert Jones. I'm the controller of Misty Island. This is my wife, and these are my children, Adam, Bonnie and Chip.

Adam, Bonnie and Chip Jones: Hello.

Ryan: Nice to meet you all. All aboard for... (Yawns) Arlesburgh West.

Mr. Gilbert Jones: Are you feeling alright, Ryan. You seem tired.

Ryan: Maybe a little, but that doesn't mean I can't take you to the harbor. Climb on board.

Narrator: So Mr. Jones and his family climb on board Ryan's coach, and Ryan puffed off to his branch line. Ryan's next job was to pick up some ballast from the Arlesdale Railway, but he was so tired that he was very confused about his jobs.

Ryan: (Yawns) I have to take the Jones family to the Arlesdale Railway, and then pick up ballast from the harbor.

Narrator: So Ryan stopped near the Arlesdale Railway first.

Ryan: This is your stop.

Narrator: Mr. Jones and his family got off Ryan's train, but they were puzzled. This didn't seem like a harbor at all. Ryan puffed away. He picked up some trucks from a siding, and hurried up to the harbor. He still felt very tired.

Ryan: Hello. I'm here to pick up some ballast.

Skiff: But there's no ballast here at the harbor.

Ryan: Oh. I see that now.

Skiff: Sir Topham Hatt said that you were going to bring the Jones family up here for one of my tours.

Ryan: Oh, right. (Gasps) Fizzling fireboxes! I dropped them off at the wrong place! I must hurry back to the Arlesdale Railway. Goodbye, Skiff.

Narrator: Ryan raced back to the Arlesdale Railway as fast as he could. But when he arrived, the Jones family were nowhere to be seen.

Frank: They're gone, Ryan. They boarded Jock's train, and he puffed out of the station.

Ryan: Oh no! I'm sure to be in trouble now.

Narrator: Ryan picked up the ballast, and puffed sadly away. For the rest of the morning, Ryan kept worrying about what Mr. Jones would say the next time he saw him. Later, Ryan puffed back to the Arlesdale Railway, just as Jock was pulling into the station.

Jock: Last stop!

Narrator: Sure enough, the Jones family were getting off the train and walking towards Ryan.

Ryan: I'm so sorry, Sir. You must be very cross with me. You and your family wanted to go to the harbor for one of Skiff's railboat tour, but I took you here by mistake. I was up all night due to signal problems that made me late with my night goods run, and I guess my lack of sleep guessed me to get my jobs for today mixed up.

Gilbert Jones: It's alright, Ryan. I'm not cross at all.

Ryan: You're not?

Gilbert Jones: No. We have a wonderful morning traveling along the Arlesdale Railway.

Mrs. Jones: We don't usually see engines that small over on Misty Island.

Adam Jones: It was fun.

Bonnie Jones: Thank you, Ryan.

Chip Jones: We had a great morning.

Ryan: Oh, I'm so happy to hear that.

Gilbert Jones: And we can always come back another day for one of those railboat tours. Anyway, can you take us back to Knapford, please?

Ryan: Of course, Sir.

Narrator: So Ryan took the Jones family back to Knapford Station, where Derek was waiting to take them home to Misty Island.

Gilbert Jones: Thanks again, Ryan. You're a really useful engine.

(Guard blows his whistle, and Derek leaves Knapford)

Daisy: Hello, Ryan. How has your day been so far?

Ryan: Well, it's been quite a morning.

Daisy: What happened?

Ryan: Well, let me tell your all about.
