Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer. There treatment centers and programs that deal specifically with sarcoma. It is recommended that patients with desmoplastic small round cell sarcoma be treated by a sarcoma specialist. (However, it should be noted that desmoplastic small round cell tumor is also considered a Childhood Cancer. Because of its rarity, at the moment Pediatric oncologists (who share information through the Childrens Oncology Group may also have familiarity with the disease.)
One of the most common complaints with Desmoplastic is misdiagnosis and weeks of treatment that is ineffective. Regular oncologists may not have the expertise to manage this aggressive disease. It is critical to seek out a Sarcoma specialist at least to advise the primary oncologist.
