Barton Winslow: Hurry up! I’m a busy person.
Michael Angelis: Said Barton. Goods arrive night and day at the station. Sometimes, Barton and the other Shining Time men work so hard that their bodies ache. JB King brought in a new echidna to help with the heavy work. He looked very strong.
JB King: This is Knuckles. He’s going to be hauling loads on Main Street.
Salty: Ahoy, Knuckles!
Michael Angelis: Shouted Salty.
Little Ditcher: Welcome, Knuckles!
Michael Angelis: Called Little Ditcher.
RS Mr. Conductor: You're the biggest echidna I've ever seen!
Michael Angelis: Said RS Mr. Conductor.
Knuckles: You’re a chatty lot.
Michael Angelis: Knuckles said quietly. Soon Knuckles was ready to haul a large load. His arms heaved, his feet started to move, and the mighty echidna walked away. Knuckles longed for some peace and quiet. But everywhere he went it was noisy and crowded. At the end of the day, Knuckles was looking forward to a good night’s rest. But Salty and Little Ditcher were full of questions.
Little Ditcher: What’s the largest load you’ve ever hauled?
Salty: Have you worked Marseilles?
Little Ditcher: Have you ever crashed?
Michael Angelis: Knuckles called.
Knuckles: I want some peace and quiet, and I don’t want to share a room with chatterboxes.
Little Ditcher: No need to be rude.
Michael Angelis: Said Little Ditcher.
Salty: We’re only being friendly, matey.
Michael Angelis: The next day, Knuckles hauled another long load. This time he went into the beautiful countryside. It was splendid! At last he had some peace and quiet. Just then, Knuckles stopped. There were sheep on the road.
Edward R. Furrow: The sheep escaped from that field.
Michael Angelis: Said Edward.
Edward R. Furrow: Through that broken fence.
Michael Angelis: They tried to chase the sheep back. First this way…and then, that way. They tried everything, but nothing worked.
Scuttlebutt Pete: We’ll never move these sheep by ourselves.
Michael Angelis: Complained Scuttlebutt Pete.
Edward R. Furrow: I’ll go and phone for help.
Michael Angelis: Sighed Edward. Knuckles was very unhappy. The noisy sheep were spoiling his peace and quiet. JB King was eating lunch when he got the call.
JB King: Sheep?
Michael Angelis: He exclaimed loudly.
JB King: I’ll send Harry Cupper with a farmer immediately.
Michael Angelis: The sheep were becoming noisier and noisier.
Knuckles: Please stop.
Michael Angelis: Groaned Knuckles.
Knuckles: I’d rather be back with the chatterbox boy and crane.
Michael Angelis: Just then, Harry Cupper came into view.
Michael Angelis: Exclaimed Knuckles.
Knuckles: We’re certainly glad to see you.
Michael Angelis: Before long, the farmer and his dog went to work. And the sheep were soon safely back in their field. And Knuckles was on his way again. That evening, Knuckles went in the same room where Little Ditcher and Salty were, but Knuckles spoke first.
Knuckles: I’m sorry that I was cross.
Michael Angelis: He said.
Knuckles: I’m very pleased to share a room with you.
Little Ditcher: And we’re pleased to have your company.
Michael Angelis: Said Little Ditcher.
Salty: Aye, we are!
Michael Angelis: Added Salty.
Salty: It reminds me of a story.
Michael Angelis: Knuckles smiled. The sound of “Baa, baa, baa!” would have kept him awake, but a Salty story would send him happily to sleep.
