Plot

A new hotel has just been built and there's also a narrow gauge line right behind the hotel that is being extended towards the Skarloey Railway. One morning, Bertie arrives at the hotel to pick up the visitors to the Culdee Fell Railway. They were all very excited. They board Bertie and he takes them to the Culdee Fell Railway and after that, Duck takes them to go to the Arlesdale Railway. They say thank you to Culdee and Duck takes them to the Arlesdale Railway. On the way to the Arlesdale Railway, Duck tells Donald and Douglas he's taking visitors the Arlesdale Railway so they can look around the high mountains. At last they arrive at the Arlesdale Railway and Jock takes the vistors up to the high green mountains. When they arrive to the hills, the visitors start to look around the mountains. They climb up the hills and go through the forests. Then they find an old railway and follow the old tracks. They wonder no what kind of engines worked there. They remember what Bertie had told them. After they follow the old track, they find an old shed. They were just about to leave the old shed when they suddenly heard a voice. They follow the voice until they find an old machine with a face on. It was Smudger! The engine that Duke had worked with before who turned into a generator. He told the visitors that many years ago, he used to be a steam engine, but he caused a lot trouble, was rough on the lines and derailed, was rude to the other engines and then the manager turns him into a generator and he had been lost here in the long time. Smudger asks if the visitors can help him. The visitors whispered to each other, because they want Smudger to be an engine again. They had an idea, they have one of the visitors phone the Knaford Station so he can phone Sir Topham Hatt about Smudger. He was happy after Sir Topham Hatt agrees with him. When he hangs his phone up, he had a good news and he tells them that Madge and Butch will arrive and take Smudger to the Sodor Steamworks to become an engine again which makes him happy.

A few minutes later, Madge and Butch arrived. Butch loads Smudger onto Madge and she will take him to the Sodor Steamworks. Duck and Jock are excited after they heard the news about Smudger. The visitors tell Duck that they want to return to the old railway again tomrrow. The next morning, they arrive at the old railway and look around again. The follow the old track until they find an old rusty engine. Then suddenly the old engine wakes up. The visitors are worried. If they tell anybody about the old engine, he may get sent to the smelters yard. They don't want to tell Sir Topham Hatt. The vistiors phone for Butch and Madge again and tell them about the old engine and they promise they will hide him so he will be safe. Minutes later, Butch and Madge arrvied. Butch puts the old little engine onto Madge and he weakly thanks the visitors and Madge brings him to Butch's garage.

At the station, Thomas, Edward and Duck are talking about the little old engine. They were very sad because they think that Sir Topham Hatt will scrap him. Then Edward has an idea, he tells Thomas and Duck that the little old engine must be hidden on the Skarloey Railway. Thomas likes the idea but that there was one problem, the Skarloey Engines don't want to lie to Mr. Percival. Duck told Thomas that the drivers and workmen haven't tell Sir Topham Hatt about the little old engine. Edward then tells Thomas that Duke will be pleased and that if the Skarloey Engines agree with him, Edward will bring the little old engine to the wharf that night.

Thomas arrives at Crovan's Gate station and waits for an engine to arrive. Rusty arrives and Thomas tells Rusty about the little old engine and how the engine was too risky to hide on the Northwestern Railway. He tells him that the Skarloey Engines runs on hills and mountains and the little old engine would be easy to hide there. Rusty at first doesn't know what to do about Sir Topham Hatt, Mr. Percivel or the other engines. Then Rusty agrees and tells Thomas to tell Edward to bring the little old engine to the wharf tonight.

When Rusty arrives at the sheds, all the engines are there. Duncan asks Mr. Percivel what was going on. Mr. Percivel explains Duncan that an old coach will arrive. Freddie brings in the coach, which is very old. It needed to be rebuilt. Mr. Percivel tells the engines that the hotel has opened very close to the railway and he plans to have a line to run to the hotel from Crovan's Gate. He tells Skarloey to take to the old coach to the works to be rebuilt. Duncan interrupts Mr. Percivel that he doesn't think the hotel is a great idea. Mr. Percivel tells Duncan that the hotel will be great destination on the railway. Rusty begins to feel sad because more money is being spent.

That night when the engines were sleeping, Rusty's driver comes to bring Rusty to pick up the old engine. When Rusty leaves, Duncan wakes up because he overhears him talking about the Mid-Sodor. Moments later, Rusty arrive at the wharf and he thanks Edward and then takes the little old engine to the old quarry.

When they arrive at the old quarry, Rusty tells the little old engine that he will be safe here. The little old engine is curious and he asks Rusty what he was because he doesn't have a steam come out and he has a funny smell and has no rods on his wheels. Rusty smiles and he tells the little old engine that he's a diesel engine and he uses oil instead of coal. And Rusty also tells the little old engine that the diesels are newand that no one makes steam engines anymore. The little old engine agrees with Rusty about using oil instead of coal. Rusty tells him that he was the first diesel engine on the Skarloey Railway. The little old engine tells him that he was Rusty and never had a name. He tells Rusty that he doesn't have a name because he was just the Mine Engine and no one gave him a name and he also told Rusty that his friends had names. Rusty asks Mine Engine if he remembered an engine called Duke. Mine Engine smiled and found out that Rusty knows Duke and says he's the best engine in the world. Rusty tells Mine Engine that Duke works on the Skarloey Railway. Now Mine Engine begins to feel sad because he misses Mid-Sodor all the engines except for one called Smudger. Rusty is gasped and shocked. He hadn't heard of Smudger before. Mine Engine tells Rusty a story about what happend 110 years ago.

Mine Engine tells Rusty the whole story of his life. Long ago, Mine Engine worked at the Mid-Sodor Railway and he was a mine engine and he went deep down the mine to get coal and he was friends with the other engines. There was Duke and he was named after his grace the Duke of Sodor and there was Smudger who was a nasty, rude, rough and mean engine. He teased Mine Engine because he didn't have a name. Rusty tells Mine Engine that when the Mid-Sodor Railway closed, the two engines were bought by the Skarloey Railway. Mine Engine asks Rusty who they are. Rusty says their names are Sir Handel and Peter Sam. They had diffrent names when they worked with Duke on the Mid-Sodor Railway but he couldn't remember what their names were. Mine Engine asks Rusty if one of the engine was Smudger and fortunately none of them was. Mine Engine begins his story again and there was a mine and it was a very big place on Sodor and it served the Skarloey, Mid-Sodor Rail and S.&.M Railways. There was an engine, named Bertram. He was scary looking, but very friendly. Mine Engine was friends with Bertram and there was Neil, he was one of the S.&.M. Railway engines. Mine Engine liked Neil, because he was friendly, kind and a bigger version if himself. One morning, his driver came to take him to work in the big mine. Next to Mine Engine was Smudger who taunted Mine Engine about Bertram. He told him to be nice to Bertram or he will chase down the mine and then be blocked down there and he will be lost forever. Mine Engine tells Smudger that he was not scared of Bertram. Smudger thinks Mine Engine would say that he doesn't like working with Bertram because he was scary until Duke stops Smudger and scolds him to leave Mine Engine alone. Smudger calls Mine Engine "Mr. Noname" which makes Duke angry. At last Mine Engine arrives at the mine to work with Bertram. The S.&.M. Railway engines had ordered a lot of coal. Bertram told Mine Engine to go get some coal trucks and bring them to the standard gauge trucks. But suddenly, behind Mine Engine was Bertram's driver who was talking to the miner. Mine Engine wasn't looking back and he ran all over Bertram's driver! Everyone rushed quickly and they saw the blood. It was everywhere and Bertram's driver was dead. The people were furious with Mine Engine and they angrily drag his driver out and they call the poilce. Mine Engine tries to apologize to Bertram and was an accident, but Bertram crossly intrupts him and says he would kill him! Rusty is gasped and shocked to hear this. Mine Engine explains to Rusty that his driver was sent to the corthouse and was hanged. At the Mid-Sodor Railway, Mine Engine was in big trouble with a temporary manager, and he was not a very nice man. He crossly scolds Mine Engine for running over Bertram's diver. The big question was what was going to happend to him. Duke interrupts the temporary manager and tells him that it was not Mine Engine's fault. This made him very cross! He decides to call employee's relatives and tells them to come to the Mid-Sodor for a meeting tomorrow morning. The next morning, the angry mob comes to see the Mine Engine and all the engines arrived. The temporary manager asks the woman about her husband. The wife angrily tells the manager that her husband is a shunter! Then Smudger tells the angry mob that they have to scrap poor Mine Engine and melt him down! Mine Engine felt very sad. As the sun was setting a man comes to take Mine Engine to the scrapyard and he sadly leaves. But surprisingly, he found himself left in th high hills where no one can find him so he would be safe here. It was a sad ending.

After Mine Engine tells Rusty about what happend to him in the whole story, Rusty begins to feel sad. Mine Engine thinks it's all his fault. He told Rusty that 110 years ago only seems like yesterday and he tells Rusty that the S.&.M. Railway seems bigger now. But Rusty tells him it's not the S.&.M. Railway anymore, because it's now Sir Topham Hatt's Railway. Rusty sadly tells Mine Engine that the big mine Bertram worked at shut down a long time ago and then a few years ago, the mine reopened again and Bertram still works there. Now Mine Engine begins to feel scared and he fears that Bertram would find him if knew he was still alive! Rusty told Mine Engine that Bertram doesn't come to the Skarloey Railway because he stays in the mine. The only times he goes to the Skarloey Railway is fo Halloween and Christmas. Then Rusty says goodbye to Mine Engine and he goes back to the shed. When he falls asleep back at the sheds, Rusty is traveling when he see a light flicker on and off, off and on and there in front of him is Proteus. Rusty was happy to see him. Proteus' lamp ficked on and off. Rusty sadly tells Protues about Mine Engine and he was worried that Mr. Percivel would find him and then he would call Sir Topham Hatt and they would send him to the scrapyard. Proteus tells Rusty that he knows all about Mine Engine who was involved in an accident 110 years ago. He is Sodor's long forgotten secret and tells Rusty to protect Mine Engine.

The next morning, Duncan asks Rusty where he was last night. He overheard him talking about the Mid-Sodor. Duke crossly intrupts Duncan who heard him talking to Rusty. Duncan told Duke that Rusty had left the shed last night and heard him talk about the Mid-Sodor. Rheneas asks Duncan if he didn't see the ghost engine from the last year and Rusty told Duncan that he was dreaming. But Duncan wasn't so sure. One day, Skarloey arrives at the Crovan's Gate to take the old coach to the works. The Skarloey set off and he was enjoying himself. Then there was trouble, when Skarloey goes up the hill, the old coach's chains snapped and it went downhill and passed Peter Sam. Sir Handel tries to look for the old coach with some workmen but it's gone.

Duncan gets very cross and thinks Rusty was up to something. His driver told Duncan that the passengers are waiting so Duncan sets off. At the sheds, Skarloey is sad and he apologizes to Mr. Percivel about the old coach. He tells Skarloey it wasn't his fault because he didn't check the couplings. Sir Handel and Rheneas tell Skarloey not to worry. Rusty is sad because he thinks his friends will find Mine Engine at the old quarry.

A few months later, all the engines are very busy and the old coach is long forgotten. Rusty goes to see Mine Engine. But suddenly behind Rusty was Duncan and he had a nasty plans! The next morning, Mr. Percivel goes to see the engines and he has very good news. He tells the engines about the old coach that went missing a couple months ago, he tells the engines that there's a new engine arrived on the railway. All the engines were are excited! But just then Duke begins to feel scared because the new engine is Smudger! The engines hadn't see Smudger before. They knew that Smudger knows Duke and he was very strange looking and very rough. Duke is cross to see Smudger. Smudger tells Duke that it was a long story how he got restored, the visitors went to Arlesdele where Duck took them and they looked around the Mid-Sodor Railway where they found Smudger.
