Narrator: "Spike is a dragon who lives in a library in Ponyville. He's a cheeky little dragon, with two small feet, a short, stumpy tail, two short arms, and some green scales.
He's a fussy little dragon, too. Always bringing buffaloes about, ready for the bigger animals to take on long journeys.
And when animals come in, he brings the buffaloes back home so that the animals can go and rest.
Spike thinks no animal works as hard as he does. He loves playing tricks on them, including Big Macintosh, the biggest and proudest horse of all. Spike likes whistling rudely at him."
Spike: "Wake up, lazy bones! Why don't you work hard, like me?"
Narrator: "One day, after taking the buffaloes on a journey, Big Mac arrived back at the siding, very tired. He was just going to sleep when Spike came up in his cheeky way.
Spike: "Wake up, lazy bones, do some hard work for a change!" You can't catch me!"
Narrator: "And off he ran, laughing.
Instead of going to sleep again, Big Mac thought how he could get back at Spike.
One morning, Spike wouldn't wake up. His driver and fireman couldn't make him start. His stamina was low and there was not enough strength. It was nearly time for the express. People were waiting, but the buffaloes weren't ready.
At last, Spike started."
Spike: "Oh, dear, oh, dear!"
Narrator: "He yawned.
He fussed into the station, where Big Mac was waiting."
Big Macintosh: "Hurry up, you."
Narrator: "Said Big Macintosh."
Spike: "Hurry yourself!"
Narrator: "Replied Spike.
Big Mac began making his plan."
Big Macintosh: "Yes,"
Narrator: "Said Big Mac,"
Big Macintosh: "I will."
Narrator: "And almost before the buffaloes stopped moving, Big Mac reversed quickly and held the first one's hoof."
Big Macintosh: "Get in quickly, please."
Narrator: "He whistled.
Spike usually pushed behind the buffaloes to help them start, but they always let go of him first. This time, Big Mac started so quickly, they forgot to let go of Spike. Big Mac's chance had come."
Big Macintosh: "Come on, come on,"
Narrator: "Puffed Big Mac to the buffaloes.
The line went faster and faster. Too fast for Spike. He wanted to stop, but he couldn't!"
Spike: "Peep, peep! Stop, stop!"
Big Macintosh: "Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Narrator: "Laughed Big Mac."
Buffaloes: "You can't get away, you can't get away!"
Narrator: "Laughed the buffaloes.
Poor Spike was going faster than he had ever gone before. He was out of breath, and his feet hurt him, but he had to go on."
Spike: "I shall never be the same again."
Narrator: "He thought sadly."
Spike: "My feet will be quite worn out."
Narrator: "At last, they stopped at a station.
Spike let go, and he felt very silly and exhausted.
Next, he sat on a turntable, thinking of everyone laughing at him.
And then he ran onto a path, out of the way."
Big Mac: "Well, little Spike,"
Narrator: "Chuckled Big Macintosh."
Big Macintosh: "Now you know what hard work means, don't you?"
Narrator: "Poor Spike couldn't answer. He had no breath. He just puffed slowly away to rest, and had a long, long drink.
He went home very slowly, and was careful afterwards never to be cheeky to Big Mac again."
