A still life is a pattern that remains exactly the same from generation to generation--in other words, one in which every live cell has either two or three live neighbors and no dead cell has exactly three live neighbors.

To qualify as a still life, a pattern's islands must not be groupable into two pieces that are also still lifes; whether a pattern that is separable into three or more pieces but not two should be considered a still life is debatable. A pseudo still life is a pattern composed of still lifes such that at least one dead cell has more than three live neighbors, but less than three come from each component still life.

Note that this means that any still pattern with exactly one island is a still life. (Empty space is not considered a still life.)

Examples:

A block, the most common still life:

##
##

Beehive (the second most common still life), loaf and pond, respectively:

 # ## ##
# # # # # #
# # # # # #
 # # ##

Tub, boat and ship (not to be confused with spaceship), respectively:

 # ## ##
# # # # # #
 # # ##

These can be extended to form larger still lifes such as these:

## ##
# # #
 # # #
  # # # #
   # ##

Note that the extension on the right must have both "bent ends", though they do not have to face in the same direction.

There are infinitely many still lifes--these are just a few.
