[edit] Message to Support 080919

I’m aware of your policies (https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=4201):

“Currently, you can create as many additional Basic or Premium accounts as you want to pay for, with the following limitations: You can create up to five accounts per household. You can create no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period.”

I also know that my university, at this location, has more than 6,500 students, 500 faculty members, and 200 non-teaching staff, but a single IP: 193.136.124.200. This means that whenever anybody connects to the outside world through the Internet, that person is identified by that single IP. You may read about it on this Wikipedia page: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usu%C3%A1rio_Discuss%C3%A3o:193.136.124.200, or confirm it by any other means you may have.

As I was preparing to take my 17 students to SL, I forgot to connect those two dots. So after the first student registered, no one else was able to join SL. Everybody else got the message saying that the limit of registrations per household has been exceeded.

My guess is that we have just blocked everyone else from joining SL from any office or classroom in this school.

I hope you are getting the picture of the situation.

So, what are my concerns, suggestions, and what am I asking?

1) I’m not happy with the fact that if someone tries to join SL from this school, is not going to be able to do it. I think this is not in the best interest of Linden Labs either. The limit of five accounts from IP 193.136.124.200 needs to be dropped and I urge you to do so at your earliest convenience.

2) Even if and after that exception is open, the problem of registering a group of students in a lab remains, because “You can create no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period.” That’s exactly what happens here, when all those students, as I mentioned above, are using the same IP. It might also happen that, by chance, any three or more students and/or staff might try to join SL in the same day, and starting with the third, they are not going to be able to do it. I think none of these two scenarios is in the best interest of Linden Labs either. The limit of no more than two accounts in a single 24-hour period from IP 193.136.124.200 needs to be dropped and I urge you to do so at your earliest convenience.

That’s it in a nutshell. If you don’t agree or are unable to wave those two restrictions for this school, please let me know so that I my post it in an announcement: “If you want to join SL go do it elsewhere, Linden Labs does not allow you to create an account in SL from this school.” If this sounds as awful to you as it sounds to me, I’m pretty sure you’ll sort things out.

Thank you so very much.

Sincerely,

Virgilio A. P. Machado

Subject: Ticket #4051-5273435: Sent Final Resolution (Creating accounts from the same IP)

Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2008 20:51

We have solved your issue

Solution: By default, registration is limited to 5 accounts per network and 2 within a 24-hour period. Upon request, an IP address for a school or business can be cleared for multiple-account creation.

You should be able to create multiple accounts from that IP address now. The whitelisting will expire in 6 months; if you're still creating accounts then and need it extended, just file a ticket a week or two ahead of time.

Please note that students will be able to use Second Life on any computer that supports the software; it's only account CREATION that is limited. What many universities do is allow students to create their accounts at a specific campus lab or recommend that they do it from home."

[edit] Review Lesson 01 and 02

After joining SL, more than a year went by before I could begin using SL, due to unforeseen circumstances. My arrival was at an Welcome Area on Mainland. When the students joined, they arrived at a Help Island. How do you get from any of those places to Orientation Island remains a mystery. Actually it is not at all clear where you should go next, after an Welcome Area on Mainland. These questions need to be answered before using Lesson 01 and 02 again. It would allow to get Help Island, Welcome Area, and Orientation Island in the right sequence, and in such order that the learning process of using SL could be facilitated.

So, again:

1) I’m assuming that new arrivals “enter” SL at a Help Island.

2) From a Help Island, when you are “Ready to explore more of Second Life?” you can teleport to an Infohub or similar on Mainland.

3) How/when do you go to Orientation Island?

4) How/when do you go to a Welcome Area on Mainland and get out of there?

[edit] Global Kids' Second Life Curriculum

A message, received Oct. 9, from RezEd, got my attention to the Global Kids' Second Life Curriculum, launched Sep. 3 at the Virtual Worlds Conference and Expo in Los Angeles.

A comment to that development by Jeremy Kemp on Sep. 19, included the following:

  1. GKCx overview video
  2. PDF (10Mb) version with color cover and all 9 levels bookmarked and numbered for easy reference
  3. Wiki version that, according to Jeremy, needs your help
  4. Second Life version (textures, full-perm)

Later, Jeremy added:

  1. Word Docs, on Oct. 2
  2. Global Kids' Second Life Curriculum overview video, on Oct. 7

On Global Kids' site you may find more information about the professional services offered by that independent nonprofit organization.
