Narrator: "The Cat in the Hat is a cat who lives in a big playhouse on Seussville. He is a cheeky little cat, with black and white fur, a long tail, a red bow tie, and a large red and white striped hat.
He's a fussy little cat, too. Always bringing Sneetches about, ready for the bigger animals to take on long journeys.
And when animals come in, he brings the Sneetches back home so that the animals can go and rest.
The Cat thinks no animal works as hard as he does. He loves playing tricks on them, including Joey, the biggest and proudest dog of them all. The Cat likes whistling rudely at him."
The Cat in the Hat: "Wake up, lazy bones, why don't you work hard, like me!"
Narrator: "One day, after taking some Sneetches on a journey, Joey arrived back at his house, very tired. He was just going to sleep when The Cat came up in his cheeky way."
The Cat in the Hat: "Wake up, lazy bones! Do some hard work for a change! You can't catch me!"
Narrator: "And off he ran, laughing.
Instead of going to sleep again, Joey thought how he could get back at The Cat.
One morning, The Cat wouldn't wake up. His Who couldn't make him start. His stamina was low, and there was not enough strength. It was nearly time for the express. People were waiting, but the Sneetches weren't ready.
At last, The Cat started."
The Cat in the Hat: "Oh dear, oh dear!"
Narrator: "He yawned.
He fussed into the station, where Joey was waiting.
Joey: "Hurry up, you!"
Narrator: "Said Joey."
The Cat in the Hat: "Hurry yourself!"
Narrator: "Replied The Cat.
Joey began making his plan."
Narrator: "Said Joey,"
Joey: "I will."
Narrator: "And almost before the Sneetches stopped moving, Joey reversed quickly and held the first one's hand."
Joey: "Get in quickly, please."
Narrator: "He whistled.
The Cat usually pushed behind the Sneetches to help them start, but they always let go of him first. This time, Joey started so quickly, they forgot to let go of The Cat. Joey's chance had come."
Joey: "Come on, come on,"
Narrator: "Puffed Joey to the Sneetches.
The line went faster and faster. Too fast for The Cat. He wanted to stop, but he couldn't!"
The Cat in the Hat: "Hey, hey! Stop, stop!"
Joey: "Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Narrator: "Laughed Joey."
Sneetches: "You can't get away, you can't get away!"
Narrator: "Laughed the Sneetches.
The poor Cat was going faster than he had ever gone before. He was out of breath, and his feet hurt him, but he had to go on."
The Cat in the Hat: "I shall never be the same again!"
Narrator: "He thought sadly."
The Cat in the Hat: "My feet will be quite worn out."
Narrator: "At last, they stopped at a station.
The Cat let go, and he felt very silly and exhausted.
Next, he sat on a turntable, thinking of everyone laughing at him.
And then he ran onto a path, out of the way."
Joey "Well, little Cat,"
Narrator: "Chuckled Joey."
Joey: "Now you know what hard work means, don't you?"
Narrator: "The poor Cat couldn't answer. He had no breath. He just puffed slowly away to rest, and had a long, long drink.
He went home very slowly, and was careful afterwards never to be cheeky to Joey again."
