The Towle Theater Performance

From Scratchpad

The Towle Theater Performance took place on Friday, February 16, 2007 at the Towle Community Theater in Hammond, Indiana.

This performance was unique and it featured a number of firsts for the group, including (verify):

  • The first paid performance of the Ship of Fools as a solo act.
  • The first SoF show in Northwest Indiana.
  • The first SoF show to feature an intermission.
  • The first SoF performance of Oxygen Deprivation in a formal show.
  • At just under 1-hour and 40-minutes, probably the longest SoF solo show.

The show was publicized in this article in the Northwest Indiana Times on the morning of the show.

INTERMISSION

[edit] Audience Suggestions

Being a brand new location for the Ship of Fools, most of the audience had never been exposed to them before. They knew how to laugh and did so often, but when it came to giving suggestions they were usually timid, quiet, or gave some pretty odd ones:

  • Party Quirks
    • A Dainty Flower (played beautifully by Stu).
  • Swinging Pendulum, for "not anywhere within 100 miles of Hammond," Benji received the following:
    • Terre Haute
    • 9th Circle of Hell (which was used, and to which Stu replied, "Are you sure we're not that close to it?")
    • South Bend (to which Benji replied, "Imagine you're not in Indiana for just one moment, please!")
    • Kansas
  • Deaf Interpreter
    • Cleveland, for an exotic location.
  • Stand, Sit, Bend
    • The United Nations, courtesy of Scott "Klaus" Parker.
  • Countdown 1.0
    • Fighting over the last cublicle wall.
  • Bitch Concerto
    • Stu's birth, for a major life event.
    • When they got to Beard the audience was fresh out of good (or mediocre) suggestions, so SOG told him to bitch about "not getting suggestions."
  • World's Worst/That's How It Really Happened, for "historical events":
    • A shirt
    • George Bush telling the truth
    • Yellow Fever
    • Teapot Dome Scandal, courtesy of Scott "Klaus" Parker.
  • 3 Things
    • Have my gallbladder removed

[edit] Beastie Rap

It was one of the first times this game was performed during a show, and arguably one of the best ever. Some of the best rhymes:

  • Tom
    • Peace: "It was a boom that failed it was called dot-COM!"
    • Beard: "Last name's Thurmond, his name is STROM!"
  • Sue
    • T-Rex: "She needs taming, she is a SHREW!"
  • Joy
    • Stu: "My mom was upset when she found out I was a BOY!"
    • Stu: "As a Jew one of my reactions is always OY!"
  • Mort
    • Renee: "It's the opposite of south, it is NORT!"
  • Jill
    • Benji: "Plants like to use chloro-PHYLL!"
    • Stu: "Well I've always been upset and I'm upset STILL!"
    • Stu: "Ohh another rhyme for this, it is ____!"

[edit] Memorable Moments (1st half)

  • Benji's character for Party Quirks was Moby Dick. Upon entering the party, he laid on his back and spit a mouthful of water up at Beard's face, resulting in an audience uproar.
  • The last line of the Irish Drinking Song about strippers:
    Tripod: "But I don't have a loan,

Beard: Cuz I don't have any credit,
SOG: She doesn't care though,
Stu: Do you take debit?"'

  • Peace's anchor name during Deaf Interpreter was "Thoroughly Delicious." Upon tossing it back to the newsroom, Tripod said, "Back to you, Tasty."
  • Benji's interpretation of "Go-gurt" during Deaf Interpreter.
  • Vick, the audience volunteer for Chain Murder Mystery, killed Stu after conveying the L.O.W. to him, when Stu should have actually killed him.
  • Tripod correctly guessed "Roto-Rooter Man" and "Botox" as the Chain Murder Mystery occupation and weapon, respectively.
  • Amid a confusing section of Stand, Sit, Bend which saw T-Rex walk-genuflect-hop-stand-step back-hop-sit-stand, he nearly fell on his back, keeping his balance only by flailing his arms wildly while stumbling backward.

[edit] Memorable Moments (2nd half)

  • Tripod correctly guessed he was Britney Spears who swam the English Channel during Press Conference.
  • Stu's fly was open from apparently the entire time after Intermission until Beastie Rap. He finally noticed it and closed it so secretly that no one else in the entire theater saw him do it...apparently.
  • Upon getting the "Dodgeball" suggestion for Moving People Benji replied, "That can be played with two people...it's called beating each other."
  • During the office scene in Countdown 1.0,Tripod was throwing office equipment at Beard, including the copy machine. After throwing it he said, "There's two copy machines, it's ironic!"
  • To open Follow the Leaver a library was given as the location. To this Benji replied, "They have book."
  • T-Rex's line as "Renaldo the Waiter" upon returning to the kitchen during Follow the Leaver: "Oh my God, I can't believe the accents these people want me to make."
  • T-Rex was Big Bird with yellow fever, and made a distinctively sick bird-ish sound.
  • When showing how the "Hanging Gardens of Babylon" actually happened, SOG stepped forward and said, "It looks like the Democrats really did hang the Bushes." This enduced the only audience groan for the evening, to which SOG responded, "Oh come on it's Lake County," in reference to the democratically-dominated county in which Hammond is located.
  • Stu showed the Hanging Gardens by saying "Where can we hang our weed so the Sumarians don't get it?"
  • During the Oxygen Deprivation encore, SOG and T-Rex nearly became the first drowning casualties of the game before their floor slapping and foot tapping got the attention of Benji, who quickly ran and tagged them out.
  • The Fools received a standing ovation at the end of the show!!
