  • Michael Brandon: Thomas and The Colors. All the engines on Sodor enjoy pulling passenger cars. Taking passengers makes them feel proud and useful. Sir Topham Hatt had an important announcement to make.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Today is the day of the big football game.
  • Michael Brandon: He boomed.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: The Sodor school team will play a team from the mainland.
  • Michael Brandon: All the engines were very excited.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Whoever finish their jobs first will pull the Sodor team.
  • Michael Brandon: Last year, James had pulled the Sodor team. His passenger cars have been decorated with ribbons and flags. Everyone had cheered. This year, Thomas wanted to pull the Sodor team cars. He was going to try hard to finish his jobs first. Soon, Thomas' work was done. He was sure he had finished first. And he steamed proudly to the yards. But when he puffed into the yards, there was James. James had finished all his jobs first.
  • Thomas: Cinders and Ashes!
  • Michael Brandon: Cried Thomas.
  • James: Look, Thomas.
  • Michael Brandon: Huffed James proudly.
  • James: Don't these flags look wonderful on me?
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas was upset.
  • Thomas: But you pulled the team cars last year.
  • Michael Brandon: He huffed.
  • James: And I'm pulling them again this year.
  • Michael Brandon: Snorted James.
  • James: Because I finished all my jobs and I got to the yards first.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas was very unhappy.
  • Thomas: It's not fair.
  • Michael Brandon: He wheeshed. He wanted to find a way to make James change his mind. James was on his way to collect the Sodor team. But he had to stop at a signal. Thomas puffed up next to him.
  • Thomas: I've got an idea.
  • Michael Brandon: Tooted Thomas.
  • Thomas: Why don't you take Sir Topham Hatt to the game? He will have the trophy. That's the best job. Then I can take the Sodor cars for you.
  • Michael Brandon: But James didn't want to take Sir Topham Hatt or the trophy. He thought wearing the team colors was much more exciting. Thomas tried to think another way to make James change his mind. James puffed along by the canal. Thomas raced up alongside.
  • Thomas: Wait, James!
  • Michael Brandon: Cried Thomas.
  • Thomas: Look at your reflection. Green flags spoiled your bright red paint.
  • Michael Brandon: Puffed Thomas. But James didn't think so. He thought he looked splendid. And he puffed off smiling. Thomas' idea to take the team hadn't worked. He had to pick up another one. James was still puffing proudly to collect the Sodor team. Thomas was puffing along too. He was thinking hard. Suddenly, an idea flew into his funnel. Thomas pulled up to the signalbox. He was pleased that James hadn't yet arrived.
  • Thomas: Quick sir, you must change the points!
  • Michael Brandon: So the signalman pulled up big lever. Then, Thomas watch James fly into the siding. The siding had been used for a long time. It was very overgrown. Thomas heard scratching and scraping sounds. When Thomas saw what had happened, he could not believe his eyes.
  • Thomas: Cinders and Ashes!
  • Michael Brandon: Cried Thomas. All the green and white flags had been ripped from James' funnel and cab.
  • James: The Sodor team colors are ruined!
  • Michael Brandon: Cried James. Thomas felt terrible.
  • Thomas: I'll go for help.
  • Michael Brandon: He said, and he steamed quickly away. Thomas felt very silly. He wanted to take the team and he had spoiled everything. Just then, he saw Bertie. Bertie was taking children to the football game. They were all carrying flags and wearing scarves. But Bertie had broken down. Smoke was coming from his radiator, and his engine made a wheezing sound.
  • Bertie: Please, Thomas.
  • Michael Brandon: Said Bertie.
  • Bertie: Can you take the children to the football game for me?
  • Thomas: I'm sorry, Bertie.
  • Michael Brandon: Puffed Thomas.
  • Thomas: But I have to help James.
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas felt bad. He had already got James into trouble and now he couldn't help Bertie. Suddnely, Thomas had an idea.
  • Thomas: I can take your passengers, Bertie, and I can help James too.
  • Michael Brandon: So Thomas quickly collected Annie and Clarabel and he took the children to the siding. They had a wonderful time. They decorated James with their scarves and flags. He looked splendid. When James arrived at the football field, everybody cheered. They all thought he looked wonderful.
  • James: I look even better than last year.
  • Michael Brandon: Puffed James proudly. Thomas was very pleased.
  • Thomas: Maybe I could pull the school team next year?
  • Michael Brandon: Thomas asked hopefully. James thought that was a grand idea.
  • Thomas: But only if you get to the yards first.
  • Michael Brandon: He teased.
