Transcript

Part One

Narrator: The holiday season was drawing to a close. It had been a busy year, but Molly was feeling unwell. Neville and Eagle were not sympathetic.

Eagle: {sarcastically} Poor old Molly. A shame she's out of puff!

Neville: What you need Molly, is determination and sticking power.

Molly: Sticking power be blowed! I might have known I'd get no sympathy from you two! {Later, to her fitter} I can't get my breath properly!

Fitter: You need new tubes. But we can't spare you at present. Keep going, and we'll give you a new set during the winter. {pauses to look over his shoulder} Keep this under your dome, but I did hear rumors about a new engine. We need one because if any of your four failed, we'd really be in trouble.

Narrator: He gave Molly's tubes a good clean. This helped a little, but Molly soon felt poorly again.

Sing-a-Long Segment

{Cut to Percy and Emily at Tidmouth Sheds}

Percy: Now, everyone ready for the sing-along? This is the part of the show in which all you people at home join in and sing along with us. Now this first song starts off with a real bang!

Emily: Hold everything, Percy! Did I just hear you say this song starts off with a bang?

Percy: My very words.

Emily: Well if you really expect the people at home to join in, you first ought to put them in the right mood.

Percy: The right mood?

Emily: Certainly! You got to create the proper atmosphere! Here, I'll show you!

{Emily quickly assembles a tent, a cannon, and dresses herself as a soldier, and blows on the trumpet.}

Emily: Well, what do you think?

Percy: I think you've flipped your blinking smokebox!

Emily: Well you said this next song starts off with a... {tries to stop the cannon from firing, but cannon shoots out a flag saying "BANG!"} ...bang! {laughs}

{BANG! The cannon explodes, and Percy and Emily are black as soot.}

Emily: You sure you wouldn't rather do smoke gets into your eyes? {laughs again}

Percy: Sing people...

The Beatles:
We said our goodbyes, ah, the night before.
Love was in your eyes, ah, the night before.
Now today I find you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Were you telling lies, ah, the night before?
Was I so unwise, ah, the night before?
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Last night is a night I will remember you by.
When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry.
We said our goodbye, ah, the night before.
Love was in your eyes, ah, the night before.
Now today I find you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the night before.
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Last night is a night I will remember you by.
When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry.
Were you telling lies, ah, the night before?
Was I so unwise, ah, the night before?
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before, like the night before.

{Cut back to Percy at Tidmouth Sheds.}

Percy: Well, that was pretty good, but I expect you to do even better on this next number. Just stand right up and shout out the lyrics. Are you ready?

Emily: Hold it Percy! Ain't you forgetting something?

Percy: Forgetting something?

Emily: The setting! I keep telling you got to put the audience in the proper mood first!

Percy: For the last time I listened to your suggestion, we were nearly blown to smitheroons!

Emily: So, now you're exaggerating! Smithereens is a good ten miles from here. What do you say: give us one more chance?

Percy: Well, all right. This next song is one that really takes off.

Emily: Take-off you say, I think I just got the right thing! {quickly assembles a biplane} Contact!

{Emily flies into the sky, and crashes into Tidmouth Sheds wall, creating a hole.}

Emily: Well, what do you think? {laughs}

Percy: Let's save it for when we do: "The flighter the bumblebrain!" Sing, children.

The Beatles:
Got a good reason, for taking the easy way out

Part Two

Narrator: Molly did her best, and one afternoon, she reached Knapford station feeling very pleased with herself. Her train was full, yet she had only lost a few minutes on the journey.

Molly: {to self} A little rest gives me a chance for a good breather before the hill.

Narrator: She simmered happily, as she waited for the guard to blow his whistle, and wave his green flag. The green flag waved at last.

Molly: Come on! Come on, come on, come- OH! {crack!}

Narrator: Suddenly, there was a jerk, and everything seemed easy! Molly's driver looked back.

Molly's driver: Woah, Molly! Back we go - we've left our train behind!

Guard: The tender coupling's broke. We'll just have to stick around until someone can bring us a spare.

Molly: {angrily} Stick around?! I know what Neville and Eagle will say about "sticking"!

Molly's driver: Hey! You've given me an idea!

Narrator: He disappeared into the station shop, and returned carrying a small box.

Molly's driver: Glue - it's supposed to stick anything!

Molly: Even trains?

Narrator: Her driver ignored her, and set to work.

Molly: Now I've heard everything!

Narrator: Then, an idea came to her, and she smiled!

Molly: {smirking} That'll stop their teasing!

Narrator: At last, the job was done.

Molly's driver: There's no hurry. We'll take is steadily, and make sure the passengers get home. The guard has told them what's happened, and they said they don't mind being late.

Narrator: Gordon's hill was the difficult part. Gently and carefully, Molly eased the train up the hill, and after that, though she took care, it was growing confidence as she arrived at Maron where Gordon was waiting. The passengers congratulated her, and gave her three cheers. When Neville and Eagle came into the shed that evening, they looked tired.

Eagle: Phew! Thank goodness we're not as busy as that every day!

Molly: {grinning} Sorry you're tired! I thought you older engines had sticking power! What you need is...

Narrator: And she told them about her adventure with the glue.

Molly: ...so that's sticking power! Never mind - some of us have it, and some of us don't. Good night!

Narrator: And she went happily to sleep.
