  • Narrator: Everyday, Mr. Percival came to the station to catch his train.
  • Mr. Percival: Hello.
  • Narrator: He always said to Toby.
  • Mr. Percival: Remember, don't be impatient, Toby. You can never be as strong and fast as Spencer, but you can be a really useful engine. Don't let the silly trucks tease you.
  • Narrator: There were lots of trucks, and Toby worked very hard pushing and pulling them into place. There was also a small coach and two strange things his driver called cranes.
  • Toby's Driver: That's the breakdown train.
  • Narrator: He told Toby.
  • Toby's Driver: The cranes are for lifting heavy things like engines and coaches and trucks.
  • Narrator: One day, Toby was in the yard. Suddenly, he heard a engine shouting.
  • Diesel: Help! Help!
  • Narrator: A goods train came rushing through, much too fast. The engine was Diesel, and he was frightened. His brake blocks were on fire.
  • Diesel: They're pushing me, they're pushing me!
  • Narrator: He painted.
  • Trucks: On, on, on!
  • Narrator: Laughed the trucks. Still shouting,
  • Diesel: Help! Help!
  • Narrator: Poor Diesel disappeared.
  • Toby: I'd like to teach those trucks a lesson.
  • Narrator: Said Toby the Tram Engine. Soon came the alarm.
  • Signalman: Diesel's off the line, the breakdown train, quickly!
  • Narrator: Toby was coupled on, and off they went. Toby worked his hardest.
  • Toby: Hurry, hurry, hurry!
  • Narrator: He puffed. He wasn't pretending to be like Spencer; He really meant it.
  • Toby: Bother those trucks and their tricks. I hope poor Diesel isn't hurt.
  • Narrator: Diesel's drivers were feeling all over to see if he was hurt.
  • Diesel's Drivers: Never mind, Diesel.
  • Narrator: They said.
  • Diesel's Driver: It wasn't your fault. It was those wooden brakes they gave you. We always said they were no good.
  • Narrator: Toby pushed the breakdown train alongside. Then he pulled the unhurt trucks out of the way.
  • Trucks: Oh dear, oh dear!
  • Narrator: They groaned.
  • Toby: Serves you right, serves you right!
  • Narrator: Said Toby. He was hard at work puffing backwards and fowards all afternoon.
  • Toby: This will teach you a lesson. This will teach you a lesson.
  • Narrator: He told the trucks. And they answered,
  • Trucks: Yes it will, Yes it will.
  • Narrator: They left the broken trucks, then with two cranes, they put Diesel back on the rails. He tried to move, but he couldn't, so Toby helped him back home. Mr. Percival was waiting anxiously for them.
  • Mr. Percival: Well Toby,
  • Narrator: He said.
  • Mr. Percival: I've heard all about it and I'm very pleased with you. You're a really useful engine. Diesel shall have some proper brakes and a new coat of paint, and you shall have a branchline all to yourself.
  • Toby: Oh, thank you, sir!
  • Narrator: Said Toby. Now Toby is as happy as can be. He has a branchline, and two coaches called Henrietta and Victoria. He puffs proudly backwards and forwards with them all day. He is never lonely. Hiro and Hank stop quite often and tell him the news. Spencer is always in a hurry, but never forgets to say,
  • Spencer: Poop! Poop!
  • Narrator: And Toby always whistles,
  • Toby: Peep! Peep!
  • Narrator: In return.
