This wiki is for a non total newbie audience. Deals with configuring and using debian "Etch" on a titanium powerbook (powerpc processor)

Optional step: I have a nice firewire external drive so i want to use that one. Following instructions at http://www.howtoforge.com/boot_debian_from_external_firewire did work. (Etch seems to be faster as installation and the first among italian keyboard layouts works well for X and my portable too) Otherwise one can choose whatever kind of install he pleases I have to put the kernel on hold to prevent system becoming unbootable after upgrade in the former case.

I don't want incoming connections until a proper firewall is installed: use ifconfig to see what interfaces are up (ignore the local loopback lo) and do for each the following (where eth0 is the name of the interface you must substitute

 iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --syn -j DROP

these must be added to /etc/sysctl.conf so i can use F11 and F12 as middle and right click.

 dev/mac_hid/mouse_button_emulation = 1
 dev/mac_hid/mouse_button2_keycode = 87
 dev/mac_hid/mouse_button3_keycode = 88

On my tibook, X works but in low resolution. I had to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the following changes:

 Section "Monitor"
       Identifier "Color LCD"
       Option "DPMS"
       HorizSync 28-49
       VertRefresh 43-72
 EndSection

and substituted the subsections with the following ones

 Section "Screen"
       (...)
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 1
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 4
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 8
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 15
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 16
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
       SubSection "Display"
               Depth 24
               Modes "1152x768" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
       EndSubSection
 EndSection

One must restart X to see the changes.

After setting up cdrom or network access to deb repositories i'm ready to install a decent firewall like arno's:

 aptitude install arno-iptables-firewall
