Editing tutorial
A playful bear cub invites you to explore the Sandbox

[edit] Adding content to existing pages

Since this is a Wiki, you are welcome to add to the content contained herein by editing. If you want to play around and practice editing and formatting, there's a Sandbox about which you can get help. If you're new to Wiki editing, no worries - it's quick, easy and there's plenty of help if you need it, such as the quick editing tutorial you'll find in the navigation box on every page. In tabbed browsers like Firefox 2.0 or Internet Explorer 7, you may find it useful to have more than one tutorial page open, as well as the page from this Wiki that you're editing. This Wiki uses the same MediaWiki environment as Wikipedia, so any editing skills you've developed there will work here too.

What should you add? Well, anything you think might be of interest to owners of defective Apple 17inch 1.67Ghz G4 PowerBooks with the "Bridget Riley" vertical lines display defect, including those who have been forced to pay for their own repair by Apple Inc's ignorant approach. That includes info you read on other related sites, such as those on the Campaign Resources page, or elsewhere. Indeed, you'll see many quotes from other sites on the pages of this Wiki, and following their formatting would be good practice.

[edit] Creating an account at Wikia

You don't need to create an account to edit, but doing so has advantages to you, like uploading an image or other file to the Wiki and maintaining a page watchlist - use the create account link in the top right corner, about which help is available. When you're logged in to your account, in the top right corner you'll see the following links from left to right.

  • yourUsername - takes you to your User:yourUsername page: "most people use their pages to introduce themselves and to keep various personal notes and lists." source
  • my talk - takes you to your User talk:yourUsername page: similar to private messaging on some forum and Web 2.0 sites, "user talk pages are used to communicate with other users or leave them messages. You should sign and date your contributions on all talk pages by typing four tildes: ~~~~, which will yield something like: yourUsername 19:36, 10 June 2007 (UTC)." source
  • my preferences - while the default settings work fine, there's nine tabs to allow you to customise your Wiki experience
  • my watchlist - helps you to keep track of and see current revisions of your favourite articles
  • my contributions - shows the contributions you've made, and if they're still the 'top'-most page revision

[edit] Creating a new page

Because of the way wikis work, this may seem strangely backward: choose a short name for your new page, make a link to your new page, create the page by clicking the link, copy common page features over, and then finally write your new page. But it's easy, and... it works! And if you'd like our Campaign Mascot to put in an appearance on your new page, let Dalinian know what you think Knut would say.

  1. Choose a short name for your new page - take a look at the middle section of the navigation menu box (top right) for examples; if you'd like a longer more explanatory title, you can make this a heading at the top of the page - see Diagnosis, for example
  2. Decide where your page fits - take a look at the navigation menu box (top right), and pick where your new page will be in the middle section
  3. Edit the navigation menu box and insert a link to your new page - more help with this step is on the menu box's template page (where you'll also find these instructions, for your convenience)
  4. Click on the link to your new page in the newly modified navigation menu box to actually create your new page
  5. Copy-and-paste the common page items below to your new page's editing box, then you're ready to start writing the content of your new page
  • Every new page should have these two lines, top and bottom:
{{menu box}} <!-- leave this line at the top of your page (so the navigation menu box appears top right) and add page content below -->

[[Category:Free Repair Campaign for Apple 17inch PowerBooks]] <!-- leave this line at the bottom of your page to make it part of this Wiki -->
  • If you need a green ACTION box or a yellow QUESTIONS box, here are the lines to copy-and-paste; then replace place-holders like Question1 or SubAction1A with text of your own.
<!-- the lines below between {| and |} create a yellow QUESTIONS box -->
{| style="background-color:#FFFF00;" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" border="1"
|[[Image:Knut-questioning.jpg|right]]'''QUESTIONS:'''
*'''Question1'''
*'''Question2'''
'''If so, please share your info, on this page, via [copyAndPasteLinkLocationFromEditTab editing]'''
|}
<!-- the lines below between {| and |} create a green ACTION box -->
{| style="background-color:#98fb98;" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" border="1"
|[[Image:Knut-bite-back.jpg|right]]'''ACTION:'''
*'''Action1'''
**'''SubAction1A'''
**'''SubAction1B'''
|}
  • Note on copyAndPasteLinkLocationFromEditTab:
  • right-click (or ctrl+cick on a Mac) on your new page's edit tab at the top of the page, to bring up a context pop-up menu
  • choose Copy Link Location (or similar) to copy the edit tab's link to the clipboard
  • double-click on copyAndPasteLinkLocationFromEditTab to select it
  • paste the link from the clipboard (Ctrl+V, or command+V on a Mac)
  • Then your last line will look something like...
'''If so, please share your info, on this page, via [http://scratchpad.wikia.com/index.php?title=Your_Contributions&action=edit editing]'''
  • ...which'll show up like this:
If so, please share your info, on this page, via editing
